  1. Federal once fired.

Federal brass has a reputation for having weak primer pockets. One of my first forays into reloading was a 270 Win and I used the Federal brass as it was what I was left with after shooting the factory loads. In many cases the primer pockets were oversized. I put this down to a dodgy batch but...
  2. 17 rem please help!!

No sorry, but it was a few years ago. It was a 595 Stainless synthetic in a standard stock with a PAC NOR. It has reminded me that the 595 was a bit of a problem with the claw as it used to blow off the bolt if the loads were too stiff. It happened a few times and luckily I managed to not lose...
  3. 17 rem please help!!

I've had a few 17 Rems and my first impression was that it was not a great cartridge at all. This was because I was using 20g Factory and the accuracy was crap. I then caught the bug and had a couple built. The first based on a 595 had a 1-10 barrel and it was capable of superb accuracy with...
  4. Lovex in 45/70

I'm using the same rifle as you and found 30 grains was the sweet spot in mine. I have never used any filler even when using 12 grains of Unique. Nice rifles. The best lead bullets I have found for it is the H&N copper washed ones used with a very small amount of crimp as they have no gas check...
  5. Howa rifles, are they good?

The Chuckhawks article was a good read, but the Weatherby Vanguard and Howa 1500 are not the same action at all. I have had a Vanguard and Howa and the Vanguard is more akin to the Weatherby MKV, the Howa is basically a Remmy 700 action. The guy knows his stuff, so could this be an earlier 1500...
  6. Fox round in 223

10X is a good possibility as I use in my 20, but never tried it in the 223. It may be worth a go. I can run some figures through Quickload if anyone wants to try. TNTs are another superb bullet, but don't try and load them on the lans or you won't have anything in the neck. Unless you are...
  7. 243 load

I use a standard load of 41.2 Grains of Varget under a 70 Grain NBT for testing 243s and it has in nearly every gun tested produced very good groups (even in a 1-8 twist 243 AI) I also used this for fox shooting as it was superbly accurate in my Weatherby and Remmy 700.
  8. 22-250 what to look out for?

Though not usual, I have a 1970s 22-250 Weatherby MK5 that was purchased in the States in the mid 80s. Since it was purchased, it ran at least 6000 rounds of hot loads before it gave up the ghost and was then re-barreled in 22-250 AI (waste of time over 22-250) Using a bore scope will show the...
  9. Fox round in 223

I have exclusively used 52 Grain AMax in 223 and 22-250 for a few years and have not had any issues with terminal effect. Powders wer 24.6 Benchmark or 26 grains of Varget for the 223. Benchmark gave slightly better velocity, but the Varget was slightly better accuracy at long range (not really...
  10. New Anschutz .308

I'm currently rebuilding an old .270 Anschutz. Anschutz used to use krico 700s and Savage 110s for the Actions. Waiting to put the beastie back together soon.
