If your rifle groups PPU 150gr SP you are well set - does the business on everything up to and including large red stags. You won’t realistically get anything cheaper than PPU and they’re usually in stock in most places. Copper bullets alone are often more expensive 😳
The AMax bullets found on older Hornady Black was an effective deer round.
Buy a few boxes of suitable ammo that you can get availability of and try them out. 123gr - 180gr+ will all kill UK deer very dead.
The most accurate one is probably your answer…
Good one for a sticky post…
Everyone has their own opinion / tolerance for “essential” vs. “Makes life easier” (discuss…!) A few considerations that may effect your choices:
Ground: ease of access to area, open vs tight woodland and the walking distances involved. Less inclined to worry about...
Getting behind a rifle (and scope setup!) that fits a smaller kid properly is essential to give them any chance of repeatable accurate shooting. Smaller .22 CF recoil def isn’t the issue, I’d imagine a hefty springer air rifle would be similar to a 223 with a mod
Excessively worn or damaged extractor on your bolt likely…? Spring hopefully… 2 min job for a gunsmith. Could also be really caked in carbon etc could prevent it moving correctly
Same gun - mine likes Sako Gamehead 120gr or the copper 120gr a lot, but at current prices I’m also going to try reloading next. Also tried Super Hammerhead (pretty good) and Hornady SuperPerformance 165gr (good) and Black line c.165gr AMax (best grouping of the lot but not a true “deer bullet”...
Have a Stalon Victor on 308 - very good sound reduction and is noticeably lightweight. Not sure on lifespan but this ones had c.200rds through it and no issues
Have one in .308… zero feeding issues to date. I like it a lot - Accurate and not ammo fussy.
Reassuringly weighty but not heavy in use, plus comes with side mounted swivel cups for a biathlon type sling which makes carrying it long distances a doddle.
Exactly this - life changing after years of raging at a rifle that inevitably swings on a one sided shoulder sling 😂 currently using a Niggeloh Titan.
Any UK sources for the TAB gear slings @Cloudhopper or anyone else? Keen to try one
