  1. going to be a tough season

We're going to find out if Utopia is all it's cracked up to be!
  2. solo lamping

I was thinking about one of these from Sniper Systems. http://www.globalrifle.co.uk/snipersystems-super-searcher-400-lumens-10-p.asp Any reviews?
  3. The Perfect Gun Cabinet, 6 Guns for all Tasks.

Fun game! I currently have eight, including five shotguns, a 6.5x55, a .308 and a 17HMR. The HMR is off down the road and the shotguns are really for student use on the college estate, so I'm building up to something like this; 1) .22 FAC air for vermin 2) 6.5x55 for fox, small deer, moderated...
  4. Vortex Scopes

I have a Vortex Diamondback on my 17 HMR, soon due a promotion. Excellent scope for the money.
  5. Need a deer calibre

The first non-air rifle I ever fired was a .270 and I have used one reasonably regularly since then. The recoil thing is certainly overblown and nothing to worry about unless you have a particularly recoil sensitive condition. Even then I find the felt recoil between my boss's wood stocked .270...
  6. Need a deer calibre

6.5x55 if you are going to reload, although I prefer a .308 for fallow bucks. If reloading is not on the cards then .270 or .308 depending on the rifles you can find. I swear I should be on commission considering the frequency with which I link to it, but Ballistic Studies' Cartridge Knowledge...
  7. Bigger than 243 but a bit different?

May I suggest you have a read through Ballistic Studies Cartridge Knowledge Base? http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Knowledge+Base.html There are articles on different bullet performances in a huge range of calibres, apparently based on decades of research. I am inclined to trust their...
  8. The Value of FAC Air

Thanks for all the thoughts, much appreciated! If this were only about shooting around the farmyard I would agree with the 22lr using cb/shorts etc., but my main focus at the moment is corvids and squirrels in trees, hence the air rifle interest!
  9. pheasant with 3 beaks.

It is fairly common, and as others have said it is because of either the bit not being removed or it being removed too forcefully (although this causes a range of problems, not just split beaks). A number of game vets I know are quite wound up about his at the moment as an impending welfare...
  10. The Value of FAC Air

It does seem at this time of year I have an almost constant need to be shooting into trees, either at squirrels or corvids. I rarely extend my 17 HMR beyond 60 yards, the terrain just doesn't lend itself to it. We also have a steadily increasing bunny population and being a college estate is a...
  11. The Value of FAC Air

This time of year I always get a hankering for a FAC Air Rifle. All the nest building corvids, just out of effective range of my legal-limit springer, drive me to distraction. I would probably surrender my 17 HMR in exchange for a Theoben Eliminator, so before I do I just wanted to survey The...
  12. Reintroduction of Lynx into Scotland

Could be worse. Dr David Bowman of the University of Tazmania is putting together a very convincing case for releasing elephants in Autralia.
  13. Can I use my slot for .300 Winchester Magnum

Unfortunately another example of regional differences in our licensing. I recently received a variation that simply stated ".308". Now I wanted a .308 Win, so no problem, but like Steve my curiosity got the better of me. I had a chat with my FLO, pointing out that ".308" is a calibre, one that...
  14. Westcountry Gamefair

I didn't think it was as bad as all that! I was on the BASC stand this time around and people seemed to be enjoying themselves. I didn't get away from the gamekeeping stand for very long so I can't really speak for the quality of the rest of the show, but the folk I spoke to seemed happy enough...
  15. Crufts.

I took a few of my gamekeeping students to Crufts this year. We spent very little time in the main ring but had a great time chatting to the gundog breed clubs in "Discover Dogs". Some really hard work going on to promote the so-called minority breeds, I was very impressed.
