  1. First trip to Africa, pointers?

.270 is fine for plains game hunting, I used one on a couple of trips,150 grain bullets, no problem. The PH had one as well, he used 150 grain South African ammunition, I think the brand was PMP, it was good stuff.
  2. Hilux early chassis fail: rust perforation after 7 years and just 44k miles of road use in U.K.

These guys did my Ford Ranger in 2018, made an outstanding job, when it was mot’d the mechanics would comment on it.
  3. First trip to Africa, pointers?

I’ve been hunting in RSA five times and all of the above posts are spot on ! Do a bit of homework, get a few references and then go for it, it’s a fantastic experience. Cull hunts are cheaper and you can usually are hunting a wider range of game because the costs are lower.
  4. Are there specific areas in the UK that produce better trophies

In Morayshire, specifically the area between Elgin and Lossiemouth on the Pitgaveny Estate, the ground was full of ancient sea shells as it was largely reclaimed land. They were plainly visible when the fields were ploughed. Some very good roe heads were taken from here, and when I was a lad I...
  5. Straight pull rifle what’s best?

I’ve noticed that my Beretta is a bit stiff / sticky after the first shot then it seems to smooth out.
  6. Straight pull rifle what’s best?

I agree, I have one in .308. It’s well made, not as smooth as the Blaser R8 but worth looking at.
  7. Straight pull rifle what’s best?

I had a go of the R8 on a shooting course last year, very impressed with it. It had an adjustable stock and was very easy to shoot either off sticks or a Harris bipod. If I had the money …….
  8. The WSM (Winchester Short Magnum) family- anyone in uk use them?

Over the years, Rodney Sloan has sourced rifles / ammunition from all over the globe for lots of people. Great guy, great shop.
  9. Trophy Hunting

I’ve also culled park deer and had no problem with it, it’s necessary, I don’t think it’s unethical but it’s not hunting. If it’s sold as “ hunting “ it’s gotta be fair chase.
  10. Trophy Hunting

To me, unethical means the shooting of animals in small fenced areas. I have hunted in RSA several times, on large open farms or very large fenced game farms. I never felt that what I was doing was unsportsmanlike, but I realise that hunting behind any fence raises a whole new argument.
  11. Trophy Hunting

    I should have said “ helped sustain “ rather than “ created “ .
  12. Trophy Hunting

He’s created employment by visiting the country where he hunted, which is surely better than a one off “ handout “ that wouldn’t go far.
  13. Trophy Hunting

I volunteer at a local school. Many of the teachers were anti guns and hunting but, by speaking to them, distributing some venison and taking them to clay pigeon shooting, they are now quite “ pro “ !! I’ve explained to them about ethical trophy hunting and its beneficial effects, and they’ve...
