If I was shooting open fields I would certainly be going with a 24inch 6.5CM but as I almost exclusively shoot woodland only so I want the short barrel 308, which from the videos online and replies on here is more than capable in open fields and at range but I will need to be mindful of the drop...

Well I'm currently shooting 130g in 270 so I see they do 130g ttsx in 308 so if probably go for that as it's well within the drops from 75 to 175 to not worry about hold over.

That's kinda what Heym said earlier right, because of the wider diameter or the round the 308 will suffer less drop in a shorter barrel than the 6.5. So if I want a short barrel like the above video posted then I go 308 or if I want to buy a gun now that will be flatter shooting for longer...

Well that video has pretty much sold me I think, I will be aiming to keep all my shots under 150yards so wont have to worry about hold over. It's short and light enough and recoil looked plenty manageable.

AHH ok, and is there a way to work out the MPBR for specific calibres at barrel lengths? Or as mentioned by someone else Im worrying way too much. I will mostly be shooting from 75 to 150 which all the mentioned calibres will be in the MPBR by the sounds of it.

I've spoken to a few friends aswell and they mentioned something called "minute of deer" they said as long as the rifle groups within the kill zone from 50 to 150 (maybe 200 depending on calibre) then that's all you need in regards to "flat shooting" So I'm going to look into 18" inch barrelled...

Yeah I wouldn't mind if I was in the open but through the woods you catch all the branches you try and duck under or have to keep taking the rifle off your shoulder and I just don't want to do that if I can avoid it.

Yeah I'm getting that impression ha everyone has a favourite and it seems there's no right answer. I will be using a moderator so maybe the compromise you suggested would be fine, puts me back up to the 20" barrel which then opens up the 6.5cm again 😂

So maybe 308 with 18" barrel would be a good compromise?

I was hoping to be shooting factory ammo. I do have a press and dies and used to reload 308 when I used to do a lot of range days but would like to just buy factory ammo

The barrel doesn't need to be that short 20" would be fine, I didn't want a 24" flag pole on my back was all and didn't know if getting a 20" 6.5 is worth it or whether you can get another calibre to perform the same with a shorter barrel.

Well I'm if I reading this right it looks like the 308 has less drop? My main concern with the drop is it's just another factor to think of and as I'm new to stalking (not shooting) I want to try and keep it as simple as possible til I get more experience.
