  1. Ballistic vs Expanding ammo- POLL

Have you examined one? It’s a totally different polymer insert compared to the regular tips on bullets for supersonic rounds. Standard hollow point rifle bullets will not expand reliably at subsonic velocities so, yes, the tip/insert on that particular bullet does contribute to the expansion.
  2. Ballistic vs Expanding ammo- POLL

This was the reply received from Hornady themselves when someone asked the question: “You hit the nail directly on the head! Although we do not recommend the Match bullets for hunting we know that many people use them for that with tremendous results. The issue is size of animal and shot...
  3. The night vision store problems

Unfortunately the BSDE covert is one of the best VCSEL IR around - certainly the smallest and lightest of what I would consider the top 4. Second choice for me would be the LL Wraith+ 940 with either the 2x lens for wider spread or 3x if you need a tighter spot for longer range (or get both as...
  4. Ballistic vs Expanding ammo- POLL

Yes I am using them but unfortunately none recovered - the things I’m shooting with them I wouldn’t normally delve around in. ;) Although I’ll make an effort to retrieve one if I get the opportunity in future. Come to think of it, I don’t believe I’ve yet seen them recovered over on the US...
  5. Ballistic vs Expanding ammo- POLL

There are some in between as well, such as the Hornady .30 calibre 190gr Sub-X which is designed to give full expansion at very low velocities. The polymer ‘tip’ of which does contribute to the initiation of the expansion and isn’t there for ballistic performance.
  6. Available: Anti-poaching in Mozambique

If they are, then they’re lying. ;)
  7. Ballistic vs Expanding ammo- POLL

Not all polymer tipped bullets are designed to produce equal results. ;) Nosler manufacture two separate lines of their Ballistic Tip bullets - a ‘Hunting’ range and a ‘Varmint’ version, which is more or less equivalent to the V-Max. Both of the latter feature very thin jacket mouths which...
  8. The night vision store problems

My reply might have been a bit flippant but Clive doesn’t have a particular good reputation for following up on sales enquiries. Having said that, my most recent purchase from him was for the same BSDE covert illuminator, and after ordering and paying nothing happened for a few weeks until I...
  9. The night vision store problems

That’s a new one! It’s usually a case of order and take your money quickly enough and then wait ........ and wait .......... and wait ........... until ........, well you get the picture. ;)
  10. Reloading Norma

I use Alpinhunting for my Norma Oryx - always email to ascertain stock before ordering. Norma Oryx .243 100gr
  11. Pard 007 advice

There’s 2x optical magnification to factor in with the Pard before you even get to those digital ones. On my 2.5-17.5x56 S-Tac I’m at 70x mag when using max on the scope and only 2x digital on the Pard - hares look as big as heffalumps at 300m with the right IR!
  12. 1 for 1 cost

Your FLD might like to imply that is the case, and it’s probably a nice little earner for them, but it isn’t so - there is no time limit on application for a variation following disposal of a firearm. See the HOG 10.71 extract at post #5 above: “There is no set time in which the certificate...
  13. Head torches.

Nitecore HC65 - buy once, cry once! With 5 brightness levels of white light, auxiliary close-up white, plus the important red light it’s the perfect accompaniment for night shooting. Takes a 18650 battery, (can also be charged via USB port if necessary), which matches some of my NV devices and...
  14. Would you? I would..

Hmmmm ,....... can other people see you in a mirror?
  15. Suspended gralloch.

Never a truer word spoken. And tailor your kit for the intended quarry. For the smaller deer it can be as simple as a knife, plastic bags for the yummy softer bits, some form of hygienic wash up, and a larger bag/sack for field transportation. When you’re dealing with the bigger boys (and...
