  1. Tracking dog book

interesting - I think it was in this book but Jagdterriers were mentioned...dangerous game would be tracked by the Hanoverian up until the point were dogs needed to be slipped at which point the Jagd would be released. The reasoning was that the Hanoverian takes 4 years to train, but the...
  2. Tracking dog book

I've nearly finished reading it and have enjoyed it. The translation is a little bit off as I don't think that English is the translators first language and he misses some English idioms, but you can work it out. It's very focused on Hanoverian and Bavarian scent hounds and cold tracking and...
  3. A Word of Warning.

I've met Joe and Albert from Deerwise. They provide a full range of professional services including guided stalking, but also deer surveys, management plans and culls. they are trying to make a living out of deer stalking, but if you are providing a good service to your land owner, I don't...
  4. Wanted: Wanted: Muntjac carcass (in the fur) for Essex Scouts group

you are kidding aren't you - I learnt shoot air rifles as a scout including shooting rats along the river while at summer camp. We also did a bushcraft competition where we had to paunch and cook a rabbit over a fire, needless to say, it planted a seed that is still growing. I know it was back...
  5. For Sale: John Jeanneney's deer tracking dogs book

Definitely worth a read. I got a first edition years ago and I believe it has been added too. Very Teckel centric but does compare other breeds. Also not much about working dogs off a long line as most states don’t allow loose dogs.
  6. Tracking dog book

Don’t think the bugs is usually to bad, in fact the initial symptoms are quiet pleasant but sometimes it has a secondary phase which can be problematic. The first signs are your wife saying “what’s this package” followed by “how much for a book”
  7. Tracking dog book

Darn, somehow this book just appeared in my amazon basket and is arriving on Wednesday....
  8. Advice For A Lefty - First Rifle

advantages and dangers - removing your trigger hand off the stock to reload eliminates the risk (low probability/high consequence) of your finger remaining on the the trigger.
  9. Which harness for a dachshund

thanks! I was wondering if KarDog were any good- having seen what a muntjac can do to a GWP- I have no intention of finding out what they can do to Teckels!
  10. Border Terrier as a hunting companion

do you mean Andy Malcolm, never met him, but his borders look quite nice. My Border heels lovely (which is 99% of stalking with a deer dog) and points - never used her for blood tracking but have no reason to suspect she wouldn't.
  11. Roadside barrier

agreed! drivers have a responsibility to maintain control of their vehicle and (explicitly) do everything they can to avoid collisions
  12. Whats in your stalking kit?

To much when I am heading out, not enough when I am coming back
  13. Drop off in rabbit numbers.

plenty around me but I have started seeing myx
  14. Checking traps

Legally you only need to check rabbit and hare traps daily. Protection of Animals Act 1911 (Section 9) However Animal Welfare Acts (2006) require regular inspections to prevent unnecessary suffering - so you would have to justify not checking daily if some anti found a leg trapped animal before...
