Best Boots

I went with some Altberg Defenders (Grade A barely used £30 on the 'bay). Absolutely no regrets at all tbh. For the money they very much do the job. No leaks at all and comfy. Keep in shape with Ledergris every now and then. Good luck! :)
I have a pair of Altberg, ex MOD from the 'Bay' can't remember how much but not a lot I am sure.
When I first wore them in wet grass I had some water ingress by the laces and tongue.
So, out come the laces and in goes a generous dollop of Ledergris, smeared all along the stitch lines and on the tongue, put the laces back in and now feet as dry as sand from the sahara desert.

If in the OP's position with some significant money to spend, I'd be very wary of the 'big brands' reputations for actually being fit for purpose. A near £300 pair of boots that last a season or let water in?! My 10 year old pair of muck boot wellies have never let water in and they were £50 and spent most of their life in salt water surf. Not trying to influence your decision at all now OP but isn't it strange that such big players with a high marketing profile can get it so wrong for so many. The number of members on here that end up disappointed by Harkila products is notable. I'd be gutted if like others on here I'd spent big on the 'relatively' small stuff and ended up feeling let down. Maybe the way forward might be to try before you buy if possible, like you would with a rifle or scope? Ie try some loaned by a friend if possible or try on in a shop. I suspect the correct fit is key in getting this one right. Again, good luck with whatever you choose to buy...:)

There is truth in what you say but a pair of leather boots are completely different from a pair of wellies ,materials
and work involved will be at greater cost for a pair of leather boots ,wellies are fine for some situations but not all
would never choose to go on the hill in a pair of wellies no real ankle support asking for a sprained ankle at best.
And I can't put crampons on wellies:scared:

Very true

I was passing the Haix factory in Mainburg Bavaria today and they have an outlet store now open since the late summer. You can watch from a window above the factory floor how they do the work and I was well impressed. The outlet do discounts on boots and 2nds & 3rds also available, they have a website so check it out.

I have a pair of Haix cold/wet weather milsurps at the moment, cost £60. Together with gaiters they keep me as dry as wellies. Definitely the most waterproof non-rubber boots that I have ever had.
Just bought a pair of surplus haix boots on flebay on your recommendation cost me £44 Inc postage. Had been looking at wellie boots and the like as didna wanna spend a fortune like £200+ on big brand names.

Yes I agree I love mine and I think they were £80 had two sets of Harkila previously (one set under warranty) and they were pants.
Steve.
Looking to replace my Harkila boots soonish, had them 4 or 5 years, hard wearing, waterproof and no complaints!

I’d go for Lowa Mountain boots as a first choice, Meindl’s are great too. Haix and Altberg can be found at very reasonable prices and won’t let you down.

I bought a pair of Haix exmod boots for around £40 and they are brilliant, Ive spent a fortune on boots over the years and these Haix are up there with the best Ive owned.

Another vote for Haix, I've got 2 pairs. Totally waterproof, get a little bit sweaty sometimes tho. The rubber 'bumpers' round the edge are only starting to crack slightly after 5 years heavy use.

Same as me mate, the Lowa brand as are excellent, but you can get 5 pairs of brand new Haix for the price of the Lowa,

I pick up the Haix on all but my winter/snowy stalks

How do you find the fitting of the Haix boots? looking at getting some myself but wary of buying something from the 'Bay without being able to return if they don't fit!

I apologise if I'm hijacking this, just seen these (below). They seem very much cheaper than anything else; anyone have any experience of them?Screenshot 2019-11-30 at 13.11.27.png

We bought ours online from a milsurp supplier selling on ebay. No problem sending them back - my wife ordered a couple of pairs specifically so she could try them and send one pair back.
We also ordered a pair of each of the two most popular types of Haix milsurps: the combat / high liability boots, and the cold wet weather boots. The cold wet weather boots were much better - both in fit and styling - so we sent the others back.

(I should also add that the size 11 is just wee bit tight on the end of my big toe. Really could do with a 11.5 but they don't seem to do half sizes. Just hoping they'll stretch a bit with use, and in the meantime keep toenails very short and wear thin socks!).
