Hi
New to this forum and new to stalking in general. My aim is to spend the next year building up as much experience as possible with guided stalks, general research and hours in the field before getting my FAC, gun and everything else sorted. Below is a write up from my first stalk a few weeks ago.
"After completing my DSC1 last week it was great to get out on my first stalk on Saturday. I decided earlier this year I wanted to start shooting my own meat and embarked on this journey, having never held a gun before. Having no background in shooting it seemed pretty daunting knowing where to start but I have been determined to get it done.
The DSC1 was a good starting point to get some theoretical knowledge and understanding, now I need to couple that with practical experience on the field and gather hours upon hours of stalking. I still have a long way to go and am very much a novice but the most important thing to me is that my first deer dropped on the spot with a well placed broadside heart shot from 130 yards. The second deer which was about a minute later was a clean kill, dropping after running about 20 yards.
Huge thanks to Dave Alexander for helping me out and showing me the ropes on Saturday. Absolutely great guy and having someone like him to help me out in my first stalk was invaluable and hugely appreciated. Also thanks to Steven Lorimer for taking me out for some target practise and to Moray outfitting for the DSC1 course.
I wanted to jump in the deep end and make the most of my first deer so after gralloching both deer with the help of Dave I took them back home and got stuck into skinning and butchering them. This was pretty ambitious on my part having literally zero butchering experience but with patience, lots of YouTube videos and a few sharp knifes I got there in the end. The second deer skinning and butchering went much smoother than the first so I feel even after doing one I have gained some experience.
What an amazing day that I will never forget!"
