Hi all

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of what new knifes to buy that will hold a edge and last me a good while! And what you would suggest is good for out in the field for making graulick easier.

Thanks

My go to is a swing blaze and a victorinox 4"rabbit knife . If doing skinning a victorinox lamb skinner and 4" rabbit knive .

Nearly all the knives i make are specific for the job . The SLH and SGR models are very well tested , available from stock or to individual order.
Come with free resharpening (customer pays post) I expect 100 deer field gralloched with only stropping in competent hands though

If your skinning a tripe knife makes the job much quicker. I use victorinox knives in the larder and a nice custom knife out in the field.
As above Victorinox for the larder take some beating, for a field blade get a decent blade that suits the deer species you stalk and your pocket

Bowland, Danum and Zabrowski all really good blades, all with excellent qualities and build times

I use 2 blades normal 4” blade and a 3”upside down blade the the upside down blade makes un zipping a doddle and for releasing internals they are brilliant, some bigger blades aren’t the best for the smaller species

worlds your oyster for blades

Not wanting to sound like a pr€$$, but I found it’s more about the handler than the knife… My mate had a £450 knife and neither of us REALLY got on with it. I suppose we both felt sorry for it… I find that a cheap old Swiss knife does the job, and my mate now has a no name knife worth £10 and get on lije a house on fire

Over 30+ years of doing this I’ve tried a load of gimmicks to help me gralloch. Gut hooks, tripe knives, all sorts of ultimate tools. My findings are that there’s no substitute for learned skill. I now use Alan Wood mini hunters which a a plain 3” ish blade and a technique I learned off an FC ranger who deals with more deer annually than I do in a decade. It just works.

P.S. I’ve never used a Butt Out 😂😂😂😂

A tripe knife in the field, you need to be strong in the wrist to shear the ribs of a fallow/red all the rest are easy.

I use the same as what butchers/game dealers as they do it each and every day just keep them sharp.
Fancy expensive knives are what the say on the invoice £££££

Guess what this chap is using? look @ 1.45 the steel come into use

Why people buy expensive knives is they can/t sharpen cheaper ones.

best example how to steel a knife,,,

One of the best things I ever bought was a bone saw from bushwear it wasnt overly exspensive but saved my knife no end when splitting down the ribs just run the knife down where your going to cut first to split the skin and make it easier for the saw. Ok it can be done with a knife alone but if youve had a good session and youve got 2 or 3 to do buy time you get to the last one and the blades gone dull its like youve spun the knife round and are trying to push the blunt side through

Castrom bone saw (small), unzipper from monarch, castrom forester 10 knife flat grind, pair of S hooks, disposable gloves, fly net for summer if foot stalking.

I too have tried a few types/brands. Here are my thoughts:

Mora: cheap and very good. Get a bright coloured one so you don’t loose it if you put it down.

EKA Swingblade: my favourite, but the hinge can get gummed up with gore/hair so needs careful cleaning. Especially if gralloching multiple animals.

Sagen saw: small and light. Good for the ribs but rusts badly if not kept clean and dry.

A separate unzipper is useful in my view. Some don’t like them though.

The better you get at gralloching the less you tend to carry. Ohh and finally, keep you kit sharp with a good sharpener.

I think it depends how much you're going to do in the field and how much back at the larder. When I started stalking I always did a full gralloch in the field, so in addition to a knife I also carried an unzipper and a small bone saw. Now I tend to do just green gralloch in the field, so the only thing I need is my knife (Buck 110). Everything else I deal with back at the larder where I have a full range of knives, saws etc to hand.
