Observing Muntjac & CWD near Cambridge in March

Dear all,

I will be staying in central Cambridge from 9–26 March and I am interested in seeing CWD and/or muntjac while I am there.

As a Swedish stalker, I am curious about how these species use the English landscape and how they are managed. I am not specifically looking to shoot on this visit, simply to observe and learn.

I am conscious that access in England differs from our “allemansrätten” in Sweden, and I am keen to ensure I remain on public rights of way and avoid trespassing. Any general advice on likely habitat or behavior at this time of year would be much appreciated.

If anyone happens to be out checking ground or carrying out a count and would not mind company for a morning or evening, I would be happy to join.

I managed to get in contact with a local guide and had a fantastic stalk yesterday and today. Truly a different experience than the regular Scandinavian hunt. How they are laying down in the fields and don’t sense you if wind is right and their attention is is directed somewhere else. We managed to get very close multiple times and I was presented with fantastic opportunities. Culled a doe and harvested a nice buck. Most importantly had a very special stalk.

Unfortunately I don’t have access to infrastructure to hang, not even a kitchen or freezer here, otherwise I would have loved to try the venison.

Do CWD compare in taste to roe or fallow?

CWD have a unique flavour, all of their own. I wouldn't consider that they taste similar to roe or fallow.
Some people rate CWD venison very highly, but I'm not so keen myself.
