Back to a childhood passion

If you're in the business of revisiting childhood passions, don't forget what comes after the airfix modelling stage:
After they've languished unloved in a cardboard box in the attic for a year or two they get dragged forth and pressed into service as airgun targets, or launched from upstairs windows after being stuffed full of all kinds of home-made incendiary substances.

I challenge anyone to deny that that was the eventual fate of their airfix kits!

I give mine away as soon as they’re finished lol

Cock up! 😳

I hadn't noticed that the new nosewheel bay, and the cockpit tub had so much extra material that they needed to be ground down to fit. Took it a tiny bit too far and lost the front floor 🙄 Then I managed to accidentally glue it in squint, so the rhs cockpit wall was proud of the fuselage. Thankfully, a craft saw separated them, and the glue hadn't fully gone off along the fuselage seams.

I got a bit of a lucky break, and I'll be able to scratch-build the floor again, and add in the lower console and joystick

A lesson learned, found the same thing with my Spit & Mossie

Well, the bug has most definitely bitten me again! I decided I wanted a range of 111 aircraft, so bought the Revell Tornado F3, the Lightning F6 (which will have to be 23 Squadron as I can't find decals for the 111 aircraft. Very irritating), and the Gloster Meteor. I think these will turn into a beautiful post-was squadron collection.

Very pleased with progress so far, especially as it's been forty or so years since I last picked up a kit. Another few days will see it complete, then it'll be onto weathering 🙂

It's not perfect, but I'm happy so far. Bit more cockpit detailing to do also, and I decided a couple of wee extras would look good beside it too

Had a rifle back through some old photos and found a couple of dioramas that my friend and I constructed for modelling competitions when we were in the Air Training Corps.

The sea rescue was due to the fact that our squadron shared the same number as the Launch. The Typhoons was something we knocked up last second when our CO realized we didn't have an entry prepared, pretty sure the paint was still drying as we put it on display and some liberties were taken with accuracy. But for a last minute build did the job.

The action report for the sea rescue can be found here Action Report

Thank you! I have a mental image of how it'll look once complete. These things were dirty, and I can't wait to get an oil wash on it. It's bringing back a fair few memories
Not quite as bad as the Lightning but most systems leaked on the F4, including the main fuel feed gallery, hence a number of fireballs in the North Sea seen from oil rigs 😞

I have in my display cabinet a section of the bellows section from one where the stainless steel braid used to constrain the afterburner pressure pulse had eventually worn through the double-skinned bellows section.

Long breaks art Christmas were a nightmare with teams having to in to empty drip trays and to recharge various systems. Best worked, not kept idle.

I have a full resin set for the slats and flaps. I used to love seeing them looking mean with everything dropped. Even if it meant it had depressurised itself 😆

Trouble is, the new wheel wells were larger than the moulded kit ones, so the wing fabric over the top skin is under slight pressure. I'm worried that if I remove the existing flap the wing'll come apart 🤔 I could fit the slats ok, but if memory serves (and I was a plumber, so rigger stuff is mostly a mystery to me) the slats and flaps were on the same system so both would need to drop. More thinking required!

I remember it well. I also have a picture of the ground impact of the Abingdon crash which I will not post - perfect impression of an F4. Tragic 😥
I also have that photograph. Very sobering. I was actually part of the honour squad at their funeral. The crew are buried at St Michael's, just outside Leuchars. I was maybe 20 at the time? That was a very sad day, and one that will remain with me whether I like it or not 🙁
