I did try my hand at it when I worked 1994 in the USA in Kansas City, Missouri, every morning for two weeks I was out at 4am out in the public land woods before going on later to the Ford office.
I also tried again later in South Carolina when visiting a pal there but I still had no luck.
Then in 2014 Tesla sent me to Detroit and I was driving through a village in mid Michigan going to do some bow hunting on a pals land and they were all over the place, just pecking around but it was out of season.
I still have all the box calls and mouth calls as reminders.
The way they live and strut for breeding time is the same as capercaillie do.
