Does anyone else play much? My boys play in school and so it has piqued my interest once again. I generally play unrated rapid matches when I want to switch off for 10 minutes, no hassle. However a growing frustration is that as soon as you get into a winning position your opponent neither resigns nor plays it out, but just disappears and you are left to watch the clock run down. Seems really rude to me. Black left the clock to run out here, even though it is forced moves to an unavoidable checkmate.

I play against a computer with the free game by Unbalance "The Chess". When I win three in a row I then advance myself a level. But using that ruleI have not been able to get past level 42. The game stores an omage of your last game (win or lose) and you can take a time out at anytime you want.

Yes. Very rude! But it's typical of the wider virtual society these days. Your opponents would rather just shut the game down and start another rather than accept an honourable defeat. The very worst thing about social contact via the internet is that it allows cowards and cheats to profit. Anonymity results in cowardice.

There is life beyond the screen, believe it or not.
Live it.

I am out far too much as it is!

Playing chess and an active social life aren’t mutually exclusive! The last few days for example:

Saturday was out with the boys in the morning, John Lewis, butcher, garden centre, sorting the garden, chickens, rabbits, lunch, sleep in the sun, out on a fallow cull, after pub with my pals from the shoot.

Sunday was ParkRun, Mother’s Day, then a client took me for dinner and the match.

Monday, run, long day at work. Then a client drinks reception in Gaucho, I arrived late to avoid excess alcohol.

Tuesday was work etc and out in Liverpool for St Patrick’s Day.

Today our for lunch in the sun with colleagues, more work, I couldn’t make my rifle club as I had dinner and beers with my brother in town on our way to the Galatasaray match.

Tomorrow after work I’m off lamping with a pal as I need some rabbits for my recently bereaved elderly uncle that I visit and cook for.

However, occasionally, it is nice to relax with a quiet game of chess! One of the dads from school did previously invite me to join his chess club in Chester but I didn’t want to commit to another social activity on a weekday evening.

Blitz matches my time availability but it is too fast for my brain currently. I used to play correspondence chess or long, slow untimed games in person in my late teens. With blitz you need to know patterns and openings really otherwise you can eat far too much into your time before the game gets going. In blitz games it ends up being attrition of the clock rather than depth of strategy that decides my matches.

I wasn't for a moment questioning your commitment to the outdoor life. Rather, I was pulling your leg, on the basis that on-screen chess seems a little out of character and I would have expected you to be playing the real thing!
