Just been asked to clear some rats of a foxing permission I have so I'm looking to see what is about for the job.

Ideally PCP, not worried about calibre, or included scope etc.. I also have a .22 fac slot also. Not looking at spending a lot at all, just will probably be used this job, then moved on again.

Sussex area to keep cost down too.

The scope is probably more important than the rifle ( vast majority will do the job for you) since I started using a thermal scope it's transformed my ratting jobs, you'll get next to nothing in daylight, unless it's really bad🐭

Thank you! Yeah I'm in the process of buying a alpex, but I have a NV set up I use to use on rabbits that I was going to chuck on it as use thermal and soon the Alpex for the rabbits 👍

Might not be available but

Thank you will look into it !

I've tried looking on guntrader, how do I put the location on it now it's all changed ?? I can't seem to find location on the filters 🤦🙄

Don't think you can search by location now. I just put £300 as a budget and worked down in price and weren't too far from E. Sussex

Oh I see, wasn't just me being blind then 👍

I did notice there is some in Bexhill which is close to me, but still more than I want to spend really. I'll be looking at a break barrel I think.

Have a look on Holt's auction website there April sealed bid is up and running, they have FAC and non FAC available as well as a load of .22lr's.

Personally I use a break barrel .22 , mine was built to specs with Steve pope of Venom ( when it comes to shooting ) Its actually very difficult to impossible to clear rats via shooting ( especially at this time of year ). FAC power is not generally required - indeed depending on range 8-10 ftlb can work better at some locations .
Its pretty much impossible to clear rats by shooting ! However its a good way to knock them back some , before poison and traps .

I agree with that, however on one of my contracts, between 60 tons of wheat, whole/ ground, 30 tons of potatoes, 20 tons sugar beet, and X tons of calf cubes, it's pretty near impossible to get a take no matter what bait I use. To go back to the OPs question I use a 177 sub 12 ft lbs rifle with a thermal scope, you don't need an fac rifle for this job, in fact it would be far too hazardous in the vast majority of shots I take on the farm in question. personally i would use a .22 sub 12 as a spring piston break barrel . indeed i have been using such things for forty years plus , once you decide to sell the thing on you will loose little or nothing or little selling it on but why not keep it . Of course a .22rf second hand might be cheaper still and you can get low energy ammo, subsonic , std velocity and high velocity . On the low power ammo i prefer CCI quiets when low power is needed. The RF is the gun that you can shoot rats ( quietly ) and shoot 100 yard bunnies .
Cheaply made airguns normally aint worth buying and they are hard to re-sell . I never really enjoyed shooting PCP and they are too expensive for killing Rats and tough to maintain when things gp wrong. Its tough to make a mistake with the HW brand
I have way too many spring piston airguns and i have them out on long term lend to friends

Thanks for the input guys!
Back when I first starting shooting I had a bsa Scorpion se in .22 and it shot pellet on pellet and done me loads of rats and rabbits before I ventured out into the rimfires and then centerfire rifles, so didn't use the air rifle no more.
And just the quietness / multi shot / low recoil / ricochet of the air rifle was why I was looking at maybe getting another one.

I've had multiple breakbarrels also and just thought as said above, PCP would be best as well as having NV on a breakbarrel, I didn't know how would work.

I have the 22lr and again rearly use it now as I have the 17hmr or bigger calibre's which usually get chosen unless the quietness of the 22lr is needed.

Ill be back out there over the weekend shooting fox's so will have a good look at where the rats are around and see if just the 22lr would suffice and not be a danger due to the ricochet etc.
I believe I have some old style shot 22lr cartridges which would be great, I also have a little 410 that I have custom made myself with stock etc which might be another option 🤷🤷
