The PIG

Quick summary...

Vanuatu intersex pigs

Narave (or naravé) pigs in northern Vanuatu are rare, culturally significant intersex pigs—specifically male pseudohermaphrodites—that possess both male and female sexual organs. Prized for their curved tusks, these pigs are used in high-level kastom ceremonies.

Key Facts About Vanuatu Narave Pigs:
  • Physical Traits: They are genetically male with female external genitalia but often have male internal sex organs. They are often characterized by their curved tusks and, due to having no external testes, they are challenging to manage and breed.
  • Origin: The Narave are indigenous to northern Vanuatu, particularly associated with Malo Island. Research suggests they are descendants of pigs brought to the island over 3,000 years ago.
  • Reproduction: The condition is believed to be an inherited trait, often produced by specific mothers called falé-ravé or soke-rave (meaning "good-blooded" on Malo), with a reported occurrence of 20% in certain litters.

A long read. Interesting point I felt were; many intersex pig being correctly identified as modified boar not the intersex. That the intersex/ modified boar grew larger tusks and were kept for this purpose by natives for ceremonial uses.

Would The relatively small genetic profile, from early introductions, be the cause of this occurrence of intersex/ modified boar characteristics occurring with regularity? Much like inbreeding where recessive is passed on to become common over multiple generations?

What's interesting is that there are a handful of intersex conditions seen in other species and in people too. Very rare (much rarer than the rate of people identifying as trans), but it does happen. As a human, it must be very challenging, especially finding out.

In humans true physiological/genetic intersex is fairly rare, 0.018% is usually accepted medically around the world. Means that there are over 461 million intersex people in the world. It has been reported as a lot higher if you included a lot of chromosomal conditions which have subtle effects. People can have all sorts of XY mixes and extra chromosomes, some folk also have hormone reception problems in that their bodies don't react to the hormones that develop sexual characteristics as the person grows.

There are quite a few cases in deer too which really can make identifying the sex difficult when choosing a shot.

That doesn't even remotely add up. 0.018% of the world population is under 2 million people.
It's unbelievable how much of the time completely implausible figures for unconventional gender/sex arrangements are bandied around and nobody engages their brain to give them a reality check.

Are you seriously suggesting a lot more than 1 in 20 people are intersex/other chromosomal conditions?? Do you personally know dozens of these people?

The 0.018 may refer to just one type of intersex and there are a few different types (can't remember offhand but maybe 3-4 main ones). However, I agree that 461 million seems at lot higher (factor of 100) than I would expect.

Sh1t, sorry, should be 4.4 million. Looks like I hit divide instead of times on my phone calculator 🤣🤣🤣. Blame it on my age and eyesight 👀

Correct, see above, out by approx 2 decimal places.

However, the numbers of babies born with Disorder/Differences of Sexual Development does appear in some studies to be increasing, speculation on causes focuses on endocrine disrupting pollution from the plastics industry.
Its surprising just how many babies are operated on to correct non standard genitalia after birth, especially when a hospital can't really tell if it is male or female. DSD seems to be present in some form in 1 - 2% of births Disorders of Sexual Development in Newborns - Endotext - NCBI Bookshelf
