If it is JM Marlin subtract fist two numbers of your serial number from 2000 and you get a year (if it is not older then 1973)
 
I am going to say that's a fair price in today's market being a JM. Nice rifle (I have one) and great fun to shoot short range and up to 100yds. Also pretty cheap to feed if you reload.
