Barnes TTSX Copper issues

Hi All
Currently trying to work up a load for Barnes 120gr TTSX for my 20 inch Tikka t3x 6.5 cm
Have n140 and n150 and the Vit loading app so power charge is just a matter of trial and error.
My query is distance from the Lands.
First batch seated 50/1000 off the lands produced a 3 moa 5 shot group.🫣

Has anyone got a more nuanced recipe info to save me burning a load of powder and throwing not cheap heads down range?

All the Vit data is for 25.5 inch barrel.

Thanks in advance.

Load to max COAL & look for other data sources for powder weights - from my look at it the Viht app is somewhat ‘conservative’ when it comes to powder weights.

See if you can find data from Barnes for N140 - if they don’t list N140 look at other powders with similar burn rates to it like IMR4064, Reloader 15 or Norma 203b & see what the suggested weights are.

My guess is that you’ll end up with a weight that is over the max shown in the Viht app.

Don't bother seating depth too much so long as you aint Jambing into the rifling The Barnes will still work just fine so give them some room. Your powder will work . Check you haven't got your loose action screws and the barrel is not touching the barrel inlet etc .

Adjusting seating depth is not going to tighten up a 3” group at 100 yards but as a general rule they love jump.

Does the rifle shoot other ammo well?

As above posts, check the rifle over thoroughly if you don’t have a reference point.

Barnes load this bullet in their Vor-TX ammunition. Buy yourself a box of factory ammo & measure the seating depth on all 20 rounds. Then shoot some of them to see what group you obtain & record MV if you have or can borrow a chrono. If they group OK then load to that length & work up a powder load that matches the MV.

I changed from Barnes 120gr TTSX to Barnes 100gr TTSX in my 260 Rem and will pursue the same approach in the future with my 6.5 Creedmoor.

That ties in with the bullet head that the rifle shoots well, sierra 100gn varminter produces sub moa and packs a punch for foxes, munties and roe. The 120s were supposed to be for a fallow problem we need to deal with, when the time comes.

I use both in my .260 and i shoot 100 grain tTSX normally on everything deer . However the 120 grain carries more weight and on windy days on the hill your reducing your max range anyhow right ?! and a heavier bullet is going to work better ( less wind drift) in high winds ! True Hill stalking i have made bad shots because of channeling winds thar are not present at the firing point chosen.
More recently i have been using the LRX from Barns in my .243 , still lots to find out on that but the 80 grain tTSX ? but i wasn't going over to the little bullet when the winds are stiff ! On a 5-8 mph max day and flat contours ? I will be shooting the 100 tTSX they are a brilliant bullet

Have been looking at the xxreloading site/app and they have higher powder charges for the 120 ttsx than the viht app, though the projected pressures remain well within the new factory rounds just out that peak at 80,000 psi(!) . Not going there.
The xxreloading max loads peak at mid 50s.
So will try those and report back🤞

When I started my copper crusade a bloody long time ago, o was shooting 6.5x55 50tho off the lands was the key and a clean and I mean clean barrel was the key!

You will be shooting way too slow using the Vhit data. I have found Barnes like a bit of speed to get to them to group nicely. Which also helps the bullet perform terminally anyway.
I load for a MV of 2900 - 3200 depending on bullet weight, dimensions I stick to what Barnes recommend.

I spent a lot of time (and money) doing jump testing on my .308 when I started using 130gr TTSX. For the 80gr .243 and 11gr .270 TTSX, I just did exactly what @Donkey Basher suggests (with 5 fps) and they are sub-MOA. Worked for me 🙌

I have the 120 Grain TTSX loaded in the 6.5 Creed and am getting sub 0.5 inch moa 3 shot groups...albeit with RS60 powder which is more then good enough.

I should have said that if I followed the published COAL it was jamming to lands so I came back around 30 thou off the lands and worked up until I got a decent group.
