Hi folks,

Just joined the forum, based in Aberdeenshire and starting out rifle shooting.

I've been shooting shotguns for a couple of years now, clays and birds (pest control rather than game days though).

Recently had my FAC granted with a .22LR semi auto and .223 on it. Purchased my first .22 week before last and have been shooting plenty of rabbits.

I have permission on some decent spots of land so I am looking forward to getting my .223 and getting out for the foxes and roe!

Currently spending most of my time learning as much as I can about set ups to see what is going to be best suited for me starting out so all help will be welcomed.

Plan to do the usual courses and such in the near future just to be a bit more qualified in the field.

Used to have a 10/22 ruger, couldnt get rid of it fast enough🤣

Thanks, I figured for my FAC grant better to stick to the smaller calibre stuff first and I can always put in for a variation later down the line when I am a bit more experienced too. I joined the aberdeen full bore gun club last year too, so I am going through my probation there, thats definitely helping me learn a lot. Once I become a full member there I can put in a variation for a few things solely for targets, so that should hopefully coincide nicely with wanting to add to my FAC for more stalking related calibres.

Glad to hear the club is still ongoing. Their website and social media pages haven't been updated in years.

Honestly seems to be everyone has a 10/22 at somepoint. I liked it but the one I had, even after cleaning etc, always seemed to jam so got rid of it.

Also how did you go about joining aberdeen full bore gun club, I had thought it wasn't on the go anymore so would be interested to join if its still on the go etc?

I took mine to bits near enough straight away to give it a good clean and lube - just the engineer in me haha. I saw some videos on youtube about aligning the barrel a certain way or the ejector wouldnt catch the edge of the brass well enough to remove it, maybe something like that was sticking yours. Put a few hundred rounds through it so far and only had 1 casing get caught mid-eject.

For the club though yeah as gixer1 said just drop them an email. Everyone there has been great so far, very accomodating to a newbie!
 
Been looking into these a fair bit, seem popular although some folk say the SV is too heavy.
Need to have a look and handle some options before I send the variation in.

Yeah they are quite heavy. For me though, 90% of my shooting will likely be prone without having done a huge amount of walking either. There will obviously be some longer stalking days, but I'm also 34 and relatively fit so I don't think the difference between it and the standard barrel would really make a huge difference for me. I also plan to get something of a larger calibre in future, more aimed at daytime stalking....just starting out small for now.
 
I am double your age and still stalk with a .243 super varmint. But I do admit dragging 2 roe back to the car and carrying my rifle sticks thermal and all the other bits is getting challenging🦌🦌😂

Im older and less fit then you and love my Super varmint and carry it for 3 hours in some cases ... my 6.5 Creed is even heavier...and I must confess that gets a bit of a pain in the shoulder after a few hours :) Get what suits you and sod the rest of us 👍
