Gunsmith Near Inverness

Can anyone recommend a top rate shotgun smith near Inverness? - I've just got a 12 bore Browning that needs a new ejector fitting & want it done competently.
I want to deal with a proper smith - not a shop who would farm out the work.

Are thomson and campbell in cromarty still on the go???

If that is Cromarty Gunsmith - yes - I already had a chat with the man there. He sounds like a good man. Not seen his work yet but have had a good reference from a mate that uses him.
I may see you in HIS this pm.

Ian

depending which gun you've got it might be something you can do your self if you order a new part?

I'd go one further and say that Ian Thompson is a gun and rifle maker of the highest echelon. Ian built a rifle for me in the early nineties and likewise for several friends - have no hesitation, his work is superb.

My I F Thompson 7x64mm rifle built 1992

Thanks fellas for responses - shotgun is now on its way to Cromarty.
Tacb, the Browning ejector needs hand fettling to fit - that bit is easy (I'm an engineer- apprentice trained) but the rim cutout has to be machined with the new ejector fitted to the barrel with a special cutter & I don't have access to one of those. Plus timing of ejectors is a thing I've never done. Best leave it to a specialist!
I do look forward to meeting the smith at Cromarty - I do like proper rifles & chatting with folks that really know their stuff.

Ian

You will be ok with this guy, in my opinion he's a top gunsmith, did some work on oneof my rifles just last Christmas. A1 job. I'm a trained engineer but leave gunsmithing stuff to the specialists.

I'm sorry to say it's no longer with me - a classic case of "A rifle I should never have sold". It goes in that category along with a beautiful 6.5x54mm Mannlicher-Schönauer take-down I once owned.

When you do meet up with Ian, please tell him "Rob from Elgin sends his regards".

Oh dear DW -- you really do need a slap for getting rid of two real classics like that. I have only once let a rifle go that I really shouldn't have & that was my old BSA 243. It was an old nail - but it did put bullet on bullet better than any I've had since that cost 5 times as much!
I will say hi to Ian if I get to meet him when my shottie is mended.

Ian

If that's the case, it's three then as I too had a BSA .243 which shot really well, but back then the Bobbies wouldn't let me keep 2 .243s so when I bought my Sauer the BSA had to go.

Seriously, I've kicked myself ever since for getting rid of the two mentioned above. The Mannlicher-Schönauer especially, I shot a possible with it using open sights at a BDS competition in your neck of the woods using the Baillie-Grohman tang sight.

Oh, and then there was the Merkel o/u shotgun ... ... ...

... ... ... and the Browning Hi-Power Mk.III, but Governmental looney-tunes in London said I had to get rid of that :-|

A quick update -- Gun is now sorted & back from Cromarty - done very quickly (less than a week including sourcing the part from Browning ) & expertly by Charley. A gentleman & a pleasure to deal with! Thanks to all for your recommendations.

Rob - Ian has retired but still does a bit, I didn't get to meet him - pity.

Now I just need to get the gun tried out on some clays / pigeons to see if it really fits me.

Ian

Mr Rose from Cromarty gunsmiths is a great guy very helpful and professional but won't rip you off.
Used him to de-commission my grandfathers gun.
Highly recommended
