Thread: .222 Lee Loader question

    .222 Lee Loader question

Been looking, without success for a lee loader in .222,although I can readily buy a new one in .223.Anyhow I stumbled across a video on Youtube of a guy reloading .222 with a .223 loader, however I am a little doubtful and would value opinions from the more experienced.
    Cheers: Duncan

I think that a .223 lee loader will only size part of the neck of a .222 cartridge, as the shoulder is further back than on a .223 case. The lower 1/2 (roughly) will remain unsized. I'm sure it could work, but it isn't ideal.

Typical me, I watched the video after replying. I see that he taps the .222 case further into the die to compensate for the shorter head to shoulder length. The .222 does have a longer neck but doesn't seem to bottom out on anything. It looks like it will do the job every bit as well with the .222 - I'm not sure of you can create case shoulder problems if you tap the case in too hard with the rod?

Thanks for taking the time to look and reply!Unfortunately I don't have a .223 case to compare with the .222 and want to double check before I commit,I don't mind carefully tapping the case in further with the rod if that is the only difference.

I'll send you pics of the case drawings in the Lee manual so you can rest assured.
