Firearms mistakes in tv and books

Just finished a novel and in it someone checks the safety on their revolver.
Wish I had a penny..no make that a quid..for every time I've read that boo boo (no safety on revolvers).
Also..am watching "Fortitude" just now and they all seem to have scopes on their rifles.
I'm no expert but I didn't think scopes were a good idea in frozen landscapes ?.

Any favourite firearms boo-boo's ?.

ps... James Bond was pretty useless before Geoffrey Boothroyd helped him out :)

My favorite came from the mouth of my son.

At age 15 I took him to the Knob Creek Machine Gun shoot (one of our great American events) and let him shoot any one MG as a birthday present. He chose to run 1 belt through an M60.

After 3 jams on the belt he looked at me with a big smile and said "That Rambo movie is Crap...."
figured it out, that shooting a belt fed gun with a free hanging belt was not a plan for success. From that moment on he became as much a critic as I am when watching movies.

1. Safety Catch on revolvers. I think that you will find two witnesses. Google & Wikipedia.

2. The issue of scopes (and spectacles/binos) is the temperature change from warm cold. It fogs which then freezes. Don't keep your lenses at a different temperature than the air. You keep them exposed. Don't use covers or inside your jacket/pocket.

I don't understand your #1 point?.
Sure you can find a revolver with a safety on wiki or Google but ever seen one on an ordinary revolver in the flesh ?. I haven't.
I'm talking ordinary stuff not collectors or specialist.

Re your #2 point. All the folk I've seen on tv like the Inuit seem to use open sights.
Not a lot to go by but if I were up in the arctic I'd be pretty worried about a scope going t#ts up.

its brilliant in Hollywood. I just want to know where you can get those gun magazines that never run out, and that ammunition that can blast your quarry eight feet backwards. What about those grenades that explode with the force of a 1000lb bomb dropping.

And of course it's no wonder we won two world wars. All bad people can't hit a barn door at 10 paces.

we didnt ,the yanks did .have you not seen Pearl Harbour they also saved the RAF.U 527 they captured the ENIGMA machine and in the Longest day invaded europe and saved us from the rest of the world .go HOLLYWOOD NOT.

The apparent lack of recoil/muzzle blast on shotguns/sawn offs and the equally amazing effect of blowing the intended victim a distance of his/her/zombie/demon feet.

I like tha magazine that never runs out! And anyone who is shot keeps shooting and never seem to be in pain. I reckon if I got shot I would be screaming or dead.

My favourites are
1. Slide locked back on a semi auto pistol as the mag is empty but person still shooting
2. Sparks flying off point of impact, be it soil, rock, stone or metal
3. No one winces at the sound of gun fire within a couple of metres of you.
4. Endless magazines.

Commando must be the worst film for this as Arnie kills off a whole army with 1 ammo belt that miraculously regenerates everytime the camera pans back to him.

When a guy with a pump action shotgun racks it every room he goes into whether he has fired it or not, and then again when he's threatening the baddy. The place would be littered with live shells and his gun would be empty.

When you see a stovepipe jam in a semi-auto pistol and no break in the shooting happens.
I'm a pain with the remote, freeze framing, backing up and tutting at stuff like that : )

The silencers that can make a 9mm auto sound like a moderated 22rim fire?

When my kids heard my 243 go off thay politly pointed out my silencer must be broken :D

In the old westerns the hero could always shoot accurately and invariably kill the baddie at distances of up to a mile with a single shot from a revolver - often while the baddie was riding off at speed too.
The baddies however couldn't hit a barn door at 20' using a rifle............
