Teaching on a marine ecology field course on the Isle of Cumbrae (Clyde estuary). Came across a WWI era howitzer cemented into a field wall.

It is a 150mm Schweres Feldhaubitze (heavy field howitzer) made sometime between 1902/1905 by Krupps. A howitzer was a gun designed to fire shells at a high angle in a trajectory which dropped them directly in to enemy trenches.
This one has a very distinctive square section housing for the recoil mechanism situated below the barrel. The end is conical in shape and has clearly identifiable catches.

It's probably been a war trophy. Lots were brought back and presented to various towns, organisations etc. God knows how it ended up cemented into a wall though.
