A do it all scope

Evening all,

So, after the post on the V8, I thought I would pose the question, is there such a thing as a do it all scope?

Can I buy a scope that provides low level magnification for boar and is suited to deer stalking? It robust for wet weather and has high enough mag for foxing, with an equally large objective lens (say - 56 mil)?

I can think of many reasons why a company would choose not to...but..what do you all think.

Best wishes

A high magnification and a 56mm lens is not my definition of general purpose.

A Swaro PV in 2.5-10x42 is a do it all, a 2-12x50 at the most. Beyond that you are into specialist stuff.

Have a look at Swaro Z6i 3-18x50. There are clearly plenty of other options out there, but I think this one's a stonking all rounder

This would be my choice too. I have one of these on a Sako 85 in .30-'06 Spring' and I think it makes a pretty good all round package.

I've not found one yet. I've been looking closely at scopes since around 1970. There are some very good scopes in this article - Best Tactical Scopes What The Pros Use | PrecisionRifleBlog.com Regards JCS

I am not in love with anything that claims to do it all. Better to have one thing that does a great job than have something that does 10 things badly.
Tusker.

The best scope ive used is the Swarovski Z6i1.-10x42 on my combination rifle. Ive shot boar, foxes and deer on driven hunts and deer out to 250m. Hell ive even shot clays with it. Best scope ive got.

My Swarovski Z6i 2.5x15x44 takes some beating its illuminated , low mag (for Boar) and high mag (for target) it's got parallax adjustment , ballistic turret for different ranges and HD glass its a supurb picture day or night and being 44mm obj it's relatively light weight and low mounting its also very short / compact so doesn't look stupidly long like most

its to rail mounted aswell so solid as a rock

it may not be perfect but I think it's damn near close enough

You could be right there Markfox, I just prefer under 2X when the game is really close and moving fast.

shoot plenty of foxes and deer with a 6x44 and 8x50 fixed mag
not going to be much cop for driven boar at 40mph but you need to know your limitations

I'm looking at going down this route at the moment. The 2nd Gen Swaro Z6i 1.7-10x42 ticks quite a few boxes for me and might allow me to thin out some of the rest of the armoury and optics when mounted on a Helix with a couple of spare barrels added.

Which reticle does yours have? I've used the CDI on my Z6i 1-6x24 and really like it, so could see it being on the 1.7-10x42 as well.

I've got the 4A-300-I. I reckon its great for the longer shots without having to worry about the BT. However I do have a CD-I on my PH1.25-4x24 which is just excellent for driven hunts on my BBF. My mate also has the 1-6x24 CDI on his BBF as well. The 10X really helps when you are trying to line up a deer at 250m+ from a set position. Weight is important as well and the 1-6x24 balances better, plus I can shoot clays much easier as you can keep both eyes open. In the attached photo I tracked a wounded fallow and had to shoot with 1.7X at 5m. I remember winding down thinking it could explode out of anywhere and it did, but I kept both eyes open as I shouldered and fired.

There is only one true all rounder... Zeiss V8 1.8-14X50.

IMO it's a bit of a lump compared to the similar magnification range Swaro Z6i 1.7-10x42 with it's smaller tube and objective, especially for mounting on a rifle that might double for driven game or close in shooting as mchughcb has alluded to. What reticle and have you used it on a driven hunt?

+1. Unfortunately perfection doesn't come cheap. Regards JCS

very true !

the new model with the bigger front end may be just about perfect though ? the 42mm punched above it's weight but was bettered by bigger front end quality scopes on brightness in low light.
