Can anyone recommend any decent dog training books for me to buy please as I want to gain as much info as I can before I purchase a dog. Im looking for info on what to look for in a good dog, how to raise a pup, basic training and maybe information on tracking. Im pretty sure there are some crappy books out there so I would rather ask on here first .

Many thanks

Pete

If its a HPR you are going for I can recommend The Versatile Gundog by Guy Wallace. This is for all round shooting requirements or if Its purely for tracking I am sure someone else on here will know of one.

Hi,
you can guarantee that whichever one you get, your dog will have read a different book :) My best advice is choose one dog trainer and stick to their ideas. There is only one thing that two dog trainers will agree on and that is that the third one is doing it all wrong.

I would either use Joe Irvings books or Moxon.

If you are more visual, buy a set of DVD from the Paul French video website and stick to those. Just don't have too many cooks and all that.

Guy Wallace's accompanying book The Specialist Gundog covers using HPR's for deer work along with a few other specialised roles.
