The Hornady manual recommends a COL of 2.8 inches for ammunition using these bullets. Regards JCS

71.2 - 71.5mm COL and 44gr Varget or N140 seems to be a good starting point for the 155 a-max. They don't mind a jump.

    Sorry: Educational Moment coming.

    ROE244,

How on earth would anyone know were the lands of your rifle begin with respect to the breech face? Or the shoulder? Or any other DATUM point? They can't. They are good fellows so they give you what works for them but that doesn't have any bearing on your particular chamber. The only answer that is completely relevant is JCAMPBELLSMITH's response. You start at the recommended OAL and then tweak from there to find what is right for your rifle. Just randomly selecting a distance puts you in ballistic no-man's land. The data you are using was derived from a FL resized case (new) and the ammo loaded to the OAL specified. Wouldn't that be a fantastic place to start? If you load well, and consistently -and the component chain is compatible, I'm thinking you won't need to stray far. 155 Sierra Palma loaded to recommended OAL in FL sized cases shoot half MOA in three of my 5 three-oh-eights.~Muir

Don't think there is much mystery in a R8 308 chamber, standard COL as in 2.8" or 71.1mm with 155 a-max will fit in the chamber and mag. Recon the orgive will be at a similar position as 167/168 factory match ammo.

You certainly don't want to seat a 155-gr Palma bullet out further than 2.80 inches, because it does not have much bearing surface, and you need it in the neck enough to get good neck alignment and consistent tension, with a little crimp.

Wherever you seat your bullets to keep them off the lands for safety (some rifles exhibit massively excessive pressure when loaded with bullets rammed into the lands).

Trust what uncle Muir has stated. He knows his stuff!
