Advice needed please.....

Hi All,

I need a bit of advice please from some of the many muntjac experts out there. I have been given a muntjac buck trophy, to put on a shield, but sadly dont know that much about muntjac trophy sizes, and as I think it is bigger than average and of a slightly unusual form, with very downturned points I was wondering if it could be approaching medal quality, and if so is it worth recommending to the owner to get it officially measured?
The ends of each antler have an upward pointing 'offer' on each side in the shape of a mini crab claw/tulip shape. both antlers are around 12.5cm long (measured around the outside of the curve from the bottom of each coronet). Any help would be graciously received.

The skull is boiled and mostly cleaned prior to bleaching.

Thanks again

Hi Andy
Try this link its to the CIC http://www.cic-wildlife.org/index.php?id=80

Click on download Redbook and look at page 92 it gives you full instructions (even I managed to follow it)

If you click on the Black book it will give you the scores needed to reach the medals.

Cheers Wayne, Hope you are well and catching up with a few deer yourself?

Thanks for the help, I just need to make an initial assessment of the head, to see if it is there, or thereabouts, then I will pay the money for a professional medal assessment and certificate. As I am a tight bugger I dont want to pay out for nothing!!

I can usually tell a medal Roe and Sika just by looking at it, but I dont have that much experience of muntjac as you know, so I thought this was the best place to come for some advice.

Thanks again. see you soon

The antlers on the gold muntjac I have measure 10.5 and 11.5. There are two points per side.

I can try to dig out the CIC form and let you know the full measurement according to the info Wayne provided if that helps?

Hi Andy

No problem mate, yep we've been busy on reducing Herefordshires Fallow population:D

I think its quite strait foward for the Muntjac, I got a couple of nice heads which failed by having no brow tines, which unfortunatley seems to be a trait around here.

No doubt see you in November.

Cheers Wayne

Nice unusual head Lakey. Dominic Griffith's book suggests that a gold muntjac needs an even head of about 12cm in length, 10cm between the beams and brow points in excess of 1cm. Coronets should be a circumference of about 8cm and mid antler length circumference of 4cm. Evenness is critical, and an absence of brow tines needs to be compensated for by increases elsewhere. Hope this helps.

Hi All, Just to update you, I took the head around to Richard Priors house yesterday for measuring and it made Bronze. It just made it.........Bronze starts at 56 points and the head measured 56 points exactly. Talking about a close run thing!
Nevertheless, the heads owner will be chuffed as it is his first ever muntjac buck.
