Road kill USA

I just passed a road kill of a young buck still in velvet seem to be black tailed deer species.
Rigor mortis was evident but the hitter had just pulled it to the roadside away from the traffic flow and left it for all to see. I would guess a bull bar had hit it.
I can pop up a pic if anyones interested.
As I was not there at the time of death I left the kidneys & liver for the yotes to feast on.
This is on highway 1 in California near Jenner ( a lovely stretch of road to drive I might add, may be the best I have seen in USA).

Shame it wasn't in Montana you could have salvaged the meat.
Picture would be interesting.
I can't believe how much road kill is on the side of roads over there, i think the first thing i would buy if i lived in the US would be a handgun, the second would be bull bars!
Cheers

Hi,
I thought you were not allowed to pick up dead deer off the roadside in the States ? Something about "being in possession of a deer without the appropriate Tag attached " Maybe the American members on here can enlighten me .

You can in Montana, you have 24 hours to get a permit to salvage the meat, if the police are on-site they can issue a permit, not that i intended to do this when i went there!

that at is determined state by state. In the Southern states we don't use tags (for the most part) so a quick phone call to police or warden is all that is necessary to legally possess road kill. In other states a valid tag is required to be affixed to each deer and this requires a bit of paperwork and the physical presence of a law officer.

The time of year also plays a factor, as does the type of strike. On average, our vehicles are much larger than yours, so quite of few struck deer are unsalvageable.

Remember seeing a cow roadkill just outside Kissimmee, Florida a few years back.
Well bloated and the turkey buzzards circling.....

I saw a whitetail doe just killed on a winding road west of Asheville, North Carolina, this weekend. There, the bears will soon get it. It was is fine shape, apparently not hit at high speed, just on the neck, breaking that.

On one stretch of interstate highway, I know the Highway Patrol calls a road crew to get the fresh deer and take them to a fellow who rescues exotic pet cats ( tiger and lion cubs ), and orphan bear cubs.

In Montana you can get a permit to salvage the meat, BUT, you must be in possession of a valid general hunting license and use your tag on it. Weird, but true according to the new local Warden. ~Muir

Having had previous close encounters with deer (and a Bison!) whilst in Montana i read up on it prior to my 2014 trip 'just in case' the worst happened, so i think the local warden is wrong in relation to possessing a hunting licence and using your tag.

In Alberta , it just takes a phone call to the RCMP or Fish & Wildlife to get permission . You don't need a license or a tag . There are some species , like Grizzly , and I may be wrong , Bighorn Sheep and Caribou , that it doesn't apply to . Moose , Elk , White-Tails and Mulies are all legally salvageable though .

I had a nice warm fresh wabbit of the road near Sandwich in Kent UK in 2013 and it was fine.
I just did the coastal route through Agnes to Grants Pass in Oregon today and saw a nice doe and fawn at 4 yards from the car feeding. 35 miles drive and only one car came in the opposite direction, an awesome drive.

I am not a fisherman but the Glacie lodge do bpat trips for the salmon along the rouge river what a stunning river. There was a early 50s film with graves (mission impossible) and rort calhoon filmed there.
Try to find that one.
Reno Nevada yesterday blowing the bucks in the casinos but the 16 dollar buffet was a huge affair to compensate
Now just passed west of lake Tahoe but the weather has closed in, expected 3 to 5 inches of snow tonight.
