Thread: ring marks on cases

    ring marks on cases

I brought some cases and bits and bobs when I brought my Marlin I have 37 that all have an indented ring on them about 15mm down from the mouth of the case I wasn't happy with shooting what was loaded so pulled all the heads, I was planning on using them on reduced load with 12 grains of trail boss powder as I wasn't happy using them on full power loads. Do you think this will be ok, or should I bin them. Also how do you think the ring marks appeared none of the spent cases I've loaded and fired had the marks so I guess it was how they were reloaded.

    What do you think?

I think you need to tell us what chambering your Marlin has & preferably post a photo or two of the problem cases - That way you may get some useful answers.

they were handloaded, by the guy I brought the rifle off surely the crimp should be at the the mouth of the case?

Did he shoot black powder in it? I'm wondering if he left space in the case..... Is there a chance your chamber is ringed as well?

What is the head stamp? Is it Remington (R-P)?

Can you take a better picture of one of the cases: in focus and close?

R-P brass is made with a subtle line about 15mm from the case mouth. Starline cases don't have this.

Crimp is there to stop bullet setback in a tube magazine.

Having asked for better, in focus pics, here's a crappy phone pic of a Remington R-P case on the right, Starline on left:
