    Suggested calibre bigger than .308

What would you go for that is lumpier than .308 but not in the magnum categories.....?
I got a variation for 8x57 to fit this bill, and whilst I'm happy rolaoding for it, stocks of supplies in the UK are nonexistent, and I can't help but think that I'm maybe setting myself up for a fall, given the tiny market for this caliber in the UK, any resale options will be limited.
i know there's 30.06 as an alternative, with much greater availability of both factory and component parts, but do any other close-ish calibres spring to mind?
Basicaly looking for for something to cater for the top end of the high 100- low 200gr bullet weights....

All 3 are in the 'magnum' category though...... Something a little smaller on the case front perhaps....

How about looking at a wildcat, either a 338-06AI or 338-08AI.

Would both be very nice calibres.
So much to learn and so little time left

You have already listed the one that you want yes the superb and very versatile .30-06 Springfield, go for it you know you want to. Seriously I have owned and used both the .308 and the .30-06 and the 06 is the one I will not be without. I reload and have used factory ammo and the 06 is the performer and more versatile in my opinion.
The ORDNANCE QF 18 pounder Field Gun......I wonder if they will let me have one of these on an open ticket

I have both .308 and 30-06 and was going to say this, but just not word it as well. I have my eye on 375h&h or 9.3x62 as a next calibre, but they will be too 'lumpy' for the bullet weight you are suggesting.

I'm thinking of going .338 Federal as a rebarrel project on a .308 action with ammo in the 180-200gr range... Necked up .308 brass, so not hard to get hold of

Plus I already have .375 on my ticket

You don't mention what you intend to use it for.

I was faced with a similar choice and opted for the 9.3x62. Other than bore size the case is almost identical to the 30-06 in fact you can fireform 9.3x62 from the ought six without problem. The range of bullet weights available in 9.3 also run on nicely from those for your .308.

Lastly, it's not difficult to make a case for UK use as it's mentioned in the HO Guidance as being suitable for boar and deer.
