fallow deer near West Linton - Carlops?

I know variations of this come up from time to time, but I'd be very curious to hear from anyone with recent robust knowledge:

A friend has just told me he's seen fallow from the a702 near Carlops.

    Is this even remotely plausible??

There are Fallow on Portmore Estate, just North of Eddleston on the A703. Carlops is only 6 miles away, as the crow flies, so it is possible

Yes - as I said, I know it's come up before.

But things change - deer move, people see things, people reasses what they saw before etc etc.

That's why I'm interested in anyone with recent knowledge of the area.

That's interesting - hadn't realised this. Is it a fenced/walled park herd, or free ranging?

I find fallow really fascinating: spread like weeds in some places, stay put for generations in others. Incredibly variable animal.

Its a free ranging herd but as far as I am aware hasn't strayed much.

Definitely Sika to the west of there. Could they be displaced Sika due to the clear felling around Lydyard/Blythe Bridge area.

Maybe someone's getting Sika with their summer coats mixed up with fallow

dont know what the OP'ed friend saw but I can 100% guarantee there are Fallow at Portmore estate.

There is a population of Sika based around the Stobo and Dawyck Estates, presume this is the same population as Ladyurd, which is just over the hill.

I've seen fallow in fields just before Eddleston on the lefthand side of the road which is near the Portmore estate. I also know of a fallow being culled in the forestry on the opposite side of the road which means they are moving away from their normal home territory.
