    Newly acquired SHR 970 6.5x55

Hi Guys, trying to shortcut ammunition selection, as ye can appreciate this is a rather busy time. Just acquired this crackin rifle, allegedly with very little up the spout. Tried a box o Norma 120g through it and it didn't like them at all, lucky if I had a 4" group. Any suggestions on factory ammo, before I have to start plagueing my mate to do a home load for me.

My SHR 970s are .308 and .280 ( and .270 with the spare barrel). I know others with .30-06, 7mm Rem Mag and .300 Win Mag - all sub MOA with lots of factory ammo, not picky at all.
The .308, .30-06, .280, .270 and .300 WM barrels are all 1:10 twist. My manual says 1:9 for the 6.5x55 Swede. So start with a 139/140 grain load, like the Prvi. Geco and less expensive rounds probably shoot very well. My Ruger 77 and my old Mauser sporter like the 140-gr bullets. You can always try more expensive stuff like Lapua, RWS and Norma, if you feel the need. I wish the stores here had Prvi 6.5x55. Their .270 is cheap and shoots great.

Do try some Privvi Partizan - it normally shoots tight groups & it is cheap. It may be a bit slow (it normally is in lots of calibres) so check its velocity over a chrono.
A 4" group with Norma factory fodder is pretty big, it normally shoots good groups in a large variety of rifles.
It may be wise to check the barrel is free floating (assuming it should be free), check bedding & all scope base & ring screws are properly tightened. Also deep clean the bore in case it has bad fouling in there.
Different weight bullets may shoot different size groups so bear that in mind when choosing.
If it still shoots big groups get someone else to fire it to see if the problem is you.
