What Determines Eye Relief On a Scope ?

    Hi,
Always wondered this and just thought I would run it past the forum, as there's bound to be an expert out there !
What determines eye relief on a scope ? Is it the type of lenses or the positioning of them within the tube ?
    Many Thanks

Wikipedia: "The eye relief of an optical instrument (such as a telescope, a microscope, or binoculars) is the distance from the last surface of an eyepiece at which the user's eye can obtain the full viewing angle."............... That's what I thought.

Thank you, I understand what it is, just wondering how it is optically built into the scope.

The ocular assembly of a scope consists of several lenses and by juggling the shapes of the lenses you can produce virtual image which your eye can see when it's at the correct distance from the back of the scope.
Eye relief and field of view are related and increasing the eye relief reduces the field of view.
MTC make the Viper connect scope which has a very wide field of view at the expense of very short eye relief.
It's so short that MTC categorically state that the scope should only be used on non recoiling rifles such as PCP air rifles
Most scopes are set up for eye relief in the 3-4 inch range to protect the eye from recoil damage.

    Cheers

lens size thickness/curvature, distance between them (why it changes under zoom)

this is not exhaustive obviously but might help
