    .22 Hornet 55grn cast bullets

Ok its time to get the furnace on and cast some 55 grn bullets for the hornet lots of people has said that the 55 grn wont stabilize in my 1 in 16 barrel, but as the Lyman cast bullet handbook gives data for exactly the same twist rate and bullet weight ive jut GOTTA try it best results is with H110 starting weight of 4.2 grn max 6.5 grn with a velocity of 1772 fps so will start of with min and work up and see how it goes
    will post the results

    Cheers
    Ray

Not being rude but cut your losses and get a hornet-friendly mold in both bullet weight and profile.

    All the best

Already got 44grn mould that shoots spot on so just playing around with what i have, gave some 55grn to a mate who is trying them in his 22-250

Got a fast twist barrel sitting here waiting to go on a rifle, should have no probs with the heavier and longer bullets in the hornet, just cannot decide to K or not...

I had this dilemma too. I gave it a lot of thought and eventually decided to leave the old BSA as original. I think the thing that most influenced my decision was the performance that can be achieved with lighter bullets and modern powders eg. H Li'll Gun.

I have been watching Ray7756's posts with interest as I have never tried casting bullets.

I have found that my Hornet shoots best with lighter bullets (40 grains) than the normal 45 grain factory loads. So I wonder if 55 grain loads are achievable at all, in a standard twist barrel at relatively low velocities and what would they be used for ?

Some time ago, one of our SD members was trying to make the .22 Hornet 'deer legal' for Muntjac and Chinese Water Deer ( 50 grain bullet and 1,000 ft.lbs muzzle energy) but we heard no more on that.

An interesting thread, something different. Thanks.

Perhaps my Anschutz is particularly fussy but it's not just the lighter bullets that deliver acceptable accuracy but ones with a stubby profile/length.

Tried the Berger 35g (non hornet coded) bullets and they were all over an A4 target! Whereas the 35g V-Max will shoot groups never worse than 3/4" all day.
