.308 for foxing

I use a .22-250 for all foxing and some roe, however I'm thinking that it may have to go due to downsizing.
I have a heavy barell .308 that is used for target and some big Red and was thinking of making it my new foxing round.
As I wouldn't need the same power for big quarry is there a bullet weight for nice flat 200 yd shooting that would suit charlie.

Charlie would not know the dif from a 180gr bullet to
a 100gr bullet. What are you using for target and ranges? If you can shoot it well now at targets why change??????

I use Nosler 155gr FMJBTHP target wise.
I would be looking for an expanding round for charlie.
I use Vit 140 powder.

Hi Kal,

I use Sako 123gr sp in my .308win and there great on fox and deer, I have never had one get up and ask for another. I zero my rifles at 150m and that then gives me a kill without adjusting between 50m to 250m.

regards Neil.

I load 110gr Sierra HP and 110gr Vmax for my .308 and they are highly destructive and accurate.
You will need a bag for the bits!

150g softpoints and 130g TTSX have always made Charlie collapse like a popped balloon for me but the lighter bullets do hold some appeal

Surely a compromise? Fast and flat at night with the mitigation in place that lighter more frangiable bullets stop quicker than big heavy deer bullets designed to stay together. If you must, you must but be extra sure what is in the next field/town if you hit a flint and kick up over the hedge.

You should always be that careful of ricochets and certain of your backstops, with any bullets.

You can load up a 125-gr .308 to 3,000 fps and shoot the same trajectory as a 55-gr .223 Rem. But for foxes, you don't need 125-gr bullet nor 3,000 fps.

110-gr bullet at 2,700 fps will shoot just like your 150-gr deer load out to 200 yards, with almost now recoil. Lots of powders will deliver accuracy.

If you are going to be shooting in a breeze, the Speer 130-gr BTHP is a great lightweight .308 bullet.

Good article with lots of loads by John Haviland.

I managed to source some Hornady 125gr Ballistic tip.
Used with Vit 140 a velocity it can fly between 2700 and 3000 ft. Zeroed at 150yds shouldn't drop more than 2" at 200yds.
I wont shoot further than that at night with bullet drop.
Just have to work out a nice steady load.

I did fancy 110gr Vmax but I only have V110 & V140. Any other powders recomended.

125 grain Nosler BT in a .308, loaded to 2.806 inch OAL, if your magazine permits, but not critical.
22-inch barrel
46.0 grains of N-135 should produce about 3,000 fps
44.0 grn N-140 with a 125g Nosler starting load, very accurate, room for more powder and velocity
42.5 gr IMR-4895, 2,700 fps
43.5 gr IMR-4064, 2,700 fps
45.0 gr Varget, 2,700 fps ( doesn't hit stride until 48.0 gr, max is 50.0 at 3,100 fps)
45.0 gr N-140, 2,700 fps ( just like Varget, better suited to 150-gr)
45.0 gr RL-15, 2,700 fps ( just like Varget)

Get some H-4895, if possible. 49.0 gr MAX, 44.0 starting, but a lot of linear pressure from 40.0 to 49.0 grains. And it is a good powder with the 110-gr bullets, because of that; because you can download to 2,700 fps with consistent velocity and good groups.

i dont own a .308 any more but when i did like many others ive used it on foxes out lamping it did the job fine as you would expect and as already said just be certain of your back stops but the truth is you have to do the same with a .22lr so no change there as for trajectory yes you will loss a little out at around 200yrds but if you look back over the last year how many foxes did you shoot at 200yrds ?
