    Sako 85 6.5x55 - Reloading

    Calling all 6.5x55 shooters

Given the current lead times on ammunition I wanted to start down the road of reloading.

I would like to get input and to know what any of you fellow shooters have settled on in respect to the load, weight, type of powder, preferred bullet etc that you have found works best with your 6.5x55.

Currently I am shooting Norma Vulkan 156g factory loads and have a consistent grouping of under 1MOA @ 100 yards.

Looking forward to some interesting reading

I use HPS Target Rifles to reload for me, and here are the recipes that they have loaded for my 75 with standard 22 7/8" 1-8" twist barrel and OAL of 3.110"...

    Bullet - Nosler 120gr BT
    Powder - N160 x50.7 grains
    MV - 2,970fps

    Bullet - Hornady 140gr SST
    Powder - N160 x46.7 grains
    MV - 2,660fps

Bullet - Lapua Mega 155gr SP
    Powder - N165 x49.0 grains
    MV - 2,478fps

The only round that I use now is the 140gr SST, but I have 20 of each of the others sat in the cabinet that will get shot at the range soon just for play.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks

What have the Hornandy 140gr perform like on game, I would expect they are pretty good in all respects but worth asking? I assume they hold a tight grouping.

    I'm liking 43.5 gr N160 behind a Hornady 140gr SST ....

I use 45.6gn N550 under a 120gn NosBT in neck sized Lapua brass. It is a pretty warm load but work well in my rifle at just under 3000fps.
The only other bullet that shoots acceptably is the 120gn Amax.

+ 1 on the hornady140 Grn sst I send that with the N160 45.8 grains my 85 stacks em on top of each other, it loves em. I don't use anything else now it's a sweet shooting round. Good luck P

Not the swede, but in the 260 the 120gn sierra game king shoots accurately and kills well.

Your sako 85 will have a short barrel so you will find N160 a bit slow hence the large charges offered. N160 can be difficult to even make 120gr bullets deer legal if you bother to chrono them. Faster powders like Rl 17 or IMR4350 will be much better.
For bullets Sierra 120gr prohunters or 140 gr game kings would be my choice. I don't like SST's they are unpredictable in their expansion. I know others love them but I prefer a good old reliable SP.
Loads I use 46gr rl17 in the 140gr and 45.5 gr IMR4350 in the 120gr. Both very accurate and the 140gr good enough for any deer including big reds.

47.5 grains of n160 under a 140 SST for 2730fps, can't remember the seating depth but the bullets about as far out as it will go
