    Muntjac - Kidney problem??

I shot a muntjac doe this morning.

She was acting perfectly normal and seems in good condition. However, on gralloching her I realised that the fat on both kidneys appears to have 'hardened off', per the pictures below. Has anyone seen this before?

In the second photo you can see the texture of the fat - it is very hard and grainy:

I haven't extracated the kidneys yet to see if they are okay underneath all of this as I wanted to hear any thoughts first.

Otherwise the carcase is in good condition and hanging in the chiller now

Yes - nothing untoward other than the solidified fat around them.

Fat Necrosis , where the fat has died off , the carcase will be fine once the affected fat has been removed

    Many thanks for your replies

Deer man - I don't think it was hydronephrosis as there were no incursions into the kidney itself. When I peeled off the hardened fat the kidneys seemed fine.

Brian - thank, I'll have a look into fat necrosis and see if that explains it.

    Thanks again
