Leica LRF800 rangefinder....would you buy one?

    Hi all,

I've been looking of upgrading my old & now optically challenged Bushnell for some time.

I've been offered a Leica LRF800 for 140?.... This seems pretty good to me as any Leica at Hawke money would....

Q? Is am I right to be thinking this way...how doe the older Leica unit stand up to more modern Tech in the same price bracket?

    I have a budget of 200

    thanks G

I used to have one & I thought it was great; actually I wish I hadn't sold it. It was very light, accurate, popped in a pocket & easy to use in yards or meters. 140 is a very fair price.

I now have a pair of range finding binoculars & they are good but heavy. It hasn't escaped my attention that the manufacturers offer 2 guarantees with the bino's, a long one for the optics & a 2 year one for the electronics. This rather suggests to me that they don't expect the range finding elements to last & you could be stuck with some very expensive heavy glass.

There might be a lot to be said for having separate units as then your loss in the event of failure is only 140.

I guess McKenzie is referring to newer Leica CRF?

I use the older LRF, although model 1200. Quite compact, easy to use, easy to hold steady using e.g. tree for support, because of the boxlike shell. No tripod attachment point.

Very good rangefinder. I've had mine for years.

Ahh, should also have understood it was LRF not CRF from your post, LRF is yards/meters by dip switch in battery compartment. CRF is either yard or meter (different model variants).

One more detail concerning LRF, while it's a bit bulky you can put the size to use, I saw one member had attached a dope card to LRF bottom surface.

if you don't want it ill have another one if its for sale at that money.

I am after a CRF 800 a tad smaller and they are great bits of kit, able to be used in very low light and in the dark as you can see the display in the dark (red)

I Have a 1200 and other than being quite chunky it works perfectly
i use it at night and it is one of the few with a illuminated readout you can see in the dark When lamping

the optics are so good I use it as a spotter in all but the darkest of areas
    140 is a bargain.
buy it if yu don't Like it they sell for more like 200!

I'd snap it up if I were you.
I have a 1200 old style and it does me fine. I bought it on the back of a mates pile of junk and gave 300 new for it at the time but don't regret it at all.

Especially if you haven't committed to yards or metres yet then the old one's are the best........ so they say
