Thread: If lead was banned, which calibre?

If lead was banned, which calibre?

Ok so hypothetically speaking ( it may happen, it may not, please don't go into the politics) if lead was no longer an option what would be the minimum realistic calibre to achieve large deer legal performance with non lead? I assume .243 would be out? Should this be an argument against being pushed into a minimal calibre on FAC applications?

I think .243 Win would still be in. It easily pushes a 85gr Barnes fast enough to still be deer legal.

Ah, would that have to be pushed fast? What about factory? Any non lead factory in .243 that would comply do you think?

Hornady do a 80gr GMX which at 3425 fps exceeds 2000 ft-lbs. So yeah, pretty fast

Like any light for calibre bullet for that matter. Unfortunately that's the nature of non-lead bullets.

And the 120gr Barnes or gmx in 6.5x55

Ok so it is possible to get a .243 non lead to be deer legal, but is it realistic to expect to be able to buy the limited ammo available?
.270 and 308 will do it but is that justification for larger calibre on the basis that lead may be banned?
