    Gwp bitch

It's with a heavy heart I have to admit defeat to my fantastic gwp Bonnie.

as much as she is a one person dog she also expects her owner to be a one dog person. Having two labs and a cocker prevents this.

Bonnie is a strange character, so gentle and loving and quite submissive in so many ways yet has some kind of insecurity when it comes to other dogs...she simply hates them and will attack if the opportunity arises for no apparent reason, to me anyway, at 100% full on aggression.
ive visited hell upon her when she has attacked my own dogs but to no avail. I hate hitting a dog and have never felt the need to for any of my others but Bonnie just doesn't seem to respond to any form of chastisement when she's attacked another dog, it's almost like she doesn't even realise she's done wrong, which, in her head, may well be the issue. Whatever it is I fear for my other dogs safety now so I'm wondering if there is a home out there for her?

deer wise she's brilliant, will point, hold point. Will track a shot deer and hold it at bay if it's alive or let you know where it is if she's allowed to free track. She works very well on the harness and knows when she's required to harness track.
She'll retrieve shot game although she's hard mouthed if there's any life left in it and has a penchant for......hedgehogs.....told you she was strange.

she likes nothing more than being with her master, in many ways a typical gwp but for this aggressive tendency to other dogs.

shes never been socialised with kids and I wouldn't trust her with a child, not given her history with things she doesn't understand.

so there we have it, a ****e start to 2016 as far as I'm concerned but this dog really has beaten me and she'd have a much better life with someone that could give her their total devotion as much as she would give them hers.

    shes legally docked
    spayed
i think she's 4, possibly five I'd have to look.

That's why I've been totally honest with regards to her problems Jimmy.
Im hoping there's someone out there that could manage a dog like this given their own situation.
shes fantastic with people and has never attacked a child, that's just my own opinion knowing her nature.
i should stress I've had Bonnie since a pup and like to think I have an idea on training dogs having a superb lab with a good youngster to follow and a very well trained cocker (yeah I know, is there such a thing!).
shes been socialised with my dogs since a pup but from the age of 6 months developed this aggressive response to any oth dog coming near her.
ive never been able to establish where this insecurity has come from, nor how to stop it, but she would make a fantastic deer dog for someone in the right scenario.

Now if anyone else thinks she should be put down fine, but that's not a discussion for this thread.
    thanks you
    Happy New Year

I remember we spoke about this some time ago Limulus, I'm sorry to hear it's got to the stage where you need to re-home her. It would be such a travesty to have her put to sleep as she's a beauty of a dog, and in the right environment would make for a cracking stalking companion for someone.

She sounds very similar in nature to my first GWP. He had to be the only dog in the house and trying to introduce a young Labrador dog was a failure and the Labrador had to go back before the GWP caused serious injury.
My dog was very loyal and an excellent house dog, no one passed the front door unless invited. Yes he too was hard mouthed, your typical GWP crocodile. We were most concerned when my youngest daughter was born and thought that we might have problems with the dog accepting her.

I kid you not I sat him down and had a word with him. I explained that if he showed any signs of aggression to her he would be going for a walk down the garden with me and the rifle and he wouldn't be coming back. After that he was extremely protective of her and the older daughter and woe betide any one who wished them harm. I know it sounds daft but he changed overnight. Perhaps he could read my mind and knew that I was serious.

I would suggest that if someone was willing to give her a try in a single dog home they may have a chance of having a very loyal hard working dog. However I would say that these dogs are not suited to total novices and they would have to be prepared to deal with any problems immediately if it doesn't work out. By contrast my current GWP is of a much easier and softer nature.
It's the calibre of the shooter that counts not the calibre of the rifle.

    Hi Limulus,

sorry to hear about your situation. It may be a bit late in the day for you, but have you thought about getting help from a qualified dog behaviour specialist? If you find one that genuinely know their stuff, they might be able to turn things around. Also has the dogs breeder been any help?

I have 2 GWPs at the moment, one going into retirement and a young one just coming up to speed...they are great dogs but they have a talent for breaking hearts.

I agree with 8x57 that there must be a good home out there, good luck in finding it. Given that she is effectively a fully trained working dog, I am sure that there is some professional deer stalker out there that doesn't have the time to bring on their own dog.

Lastly congratulations with your honesty, rather than just trying to pass on the problem.

It's a tough position to be in Martin but she'll only go to the right person. If push comes to shove she'll spend her days muzzled to protect my other dogs but I won't give up on her unless the right person comes along. Dogs have given me everything now and in the past so it's only fair to try and do what's right when a bit of a difficult one comes along.
