    chopping a .223

    gentlemen,

I'm going to get my R8 .223 chopped, will be shooting 50gn bullets, how short can i go without problems and what velocities should i expect.

it currently 22 3/4", i was thinking maybe 18" to be a good printable truck and highest gun.

    anyone done this?

Plenty of people running short barrels on 223 for fox since there is no minimum energy requirement.
Useful little link for you to give you an idea of velocities; BBTI - Ballistics by the Inch :: .223 Rifle Results

If you are using it for CWD or Munty you'll need 3001 fps to be legal with 50gr bullets.

Also, load data for 15" barrel 223:
Set your sights on pistol reloading data | Hodgdon Reloading

Looking at low 2800's to 3000 fps. Even at the low end it'll more than deal with a fox.

My .223 was shortened to 18inches. No issues and great to handle

18 inch would be the shortest I'd go

Not if he uses a mod he wont, however there is a risk of unburnt powder build up in your moderator unless you change to a faster burning powder for your reloads, the goal being to have all the powder combusted within the confines of whatever length you choose to cut your barrel to.

Or buy a strippable mod and clean it using whichever method you prefer if you don't reload
