Sometimes one size doesn't fit all, and sometimes one powder doesn't fit all. The classic American powders for the .270 WCF were 4350 and, latterly 4831. In European powders then Vihtavouri N160 is a good choice.

I stand to be corrected but I think the bullet weight, bullet diameter, and case capacity difference between .22-250 and .270 WCF is too great. An optimum powder for one won't have the characteristics to make it optimum, or safe at velocities you want to achieve, for the other.

Varget would NOT be my first, second, or even third choice in .270 WCF. Indeed, like the supposed 'old time' all around powder 4895, I would not choose it at all for .270 WCF.

I can only comment on my own Remington 270, and I use Norma brass, 4831SC x 60gn, & 130g Nosler BT's with a 3.28" AOL, Federal 210M primer, which works very well in my rifle. As always, use caution, and start 10% lower.

For the 270 Win you need a slow burning powder to get the best from the cartridge. When I was loading for mine Reloader 19 worked well as did Winchester 760 but not seen that for years. Yes it was quite a while back now. If I was to load for the 270 again would check out prices and availabilty of :

    Reloader 19 & 21
    IMR 4831 & 4350
    Hodgons 4831 and 4350
    Vhit N160

    and go from there.

What CONURE says...despite his penchant for early MSch rifles!

I had one about thirty plus years ago, 6.5x54, rotary magazine, etc., etc., and "generous" headspace shall we say, but the modernish "faux Weatherby" ones were and are truly awful.

If you are choosing Varget bscause it is "extreme" be aware that the US government rated the powders for temperature sensitivity and when all was said and done, Varget rated far enough below below that of older powders like IMR 4064 and IMR 4895 that it was removed from consideration. In fact, the 308 ...ahem..."target" ammunition specifications were set with IMR 4064. If not available, IMR 4895. This has no bearing on the use of Varget in 270 but just a warning to beware of the "extreme" sales pitch.~Muir
