    From the photo it still looks early in the day. Just perhaps the game cart hasn't arrived to pick them up yet? Lets not let the truth get in the way of a good story though!

    Looks like sun light shining in the photo so would seem unlikely to be at dusk as everyone was going home

    If the "story" is correct I would hope forgotten rather than purposely left.
