    Dogs and Deer Parts

My large black lab was looking decidedly fed-up the other day, so I gave hime a roe lower leg (inc. skin, fur, bone and hoof) to chew on.

Went to the kennel 20 mins later and he had scoffed the lot.

Next day, his stools were fine, firm as usual, but obviously packed with deer hair. He really seemed to enjoy this treat, so my question is: do you think it would do any harm to give him a leg, say every fortnight? I suspect it would do more good than harm?

    Your thoughts, as ever, appreciated.

I always give my Teckel Roe legs cleave as well, she loves them.

Any spares I use the cannon bone for boning riding boots, I can always find a hunting customer for them.

In Sweden they give their Harrier dogs the Hares head whole after smashing the canine teeth. Suposedly the teeth can cause problems.

    Oh boy is this timely!

I have today collected my lab bitch from the vet having had an operation to remove a stuck deer leg bone from her colon.

My advice...keep them away from your dogs!! Unless you like 512 vet bills and a lot of heartache. This was on top of the stone she ate just before Christmas which was also about 500 to remove...thank heavens for insurance.

Another bit of advice another very experienced labrador owning vet gave me was to keep a pack of washing soad crystals handy for when they eat innapropriate stuff. A few crystals on the back of the tongue and up it all comes...amazing!

    My terriers love Muntjac legs.
Unfortunately though, the little hooves seem to go straight through them...
