300 win mag for long range deer control

is anyone using a 300 win mag on larger deer at extended range?

what bullets are you using and what results are you getting?

(note - considering this for contract work on open ground and wide valleys, not as a recreational stalking rifle)

Using a .300 R.U.M for similar purposes. Very effective using 200g Accubonds at approx 3150fps.

Have used a .300 WM out to 350-400m with factory Norma 150gr Nosler BT to very good effect!

Also used 180 Grand Slam and 200 Accubonds

Hi, something like a Berger 210gr hunting vld would suit you well. I use them at very extended range and they perform faultlessly. It just depends on what range you are shooting, out to 600 yards I would use a 185 Berger vld, any further I would use a 210gr vld.

Not commercial but that is my go to rifle at present

Longest shot on deer is only 290 yds, not long range for some but none of my ground requires much more without being lazy
    Shortest shot was about 20yds!

But over the last 6 months I have tested it at intermediate ranges of 350-500 regularly and would not be concerned at those ranges

180gr Corelokt and 185gr Lapua Mega. Corelokt is very useful and not messy at all. even at 20 yds
Solid wound channel, penetrates both shoulders even at range, I think a bonded or locked bullet is the best choice at these speeds
They are relatively small deer afterall
Corelokt sheds less lead from the opened meplat than the Mega which I would say has a softer core

Past this I have used the 208gr AMax out to 950yds

.300 is my go to choice for everything. Had a .300weatherby but ammo was hard to find.

With a z6i ballistic turret and hornady sst 180g I shoot upto around 400 metres if needs be, but always prefer to be closer.

Most of my quarry for this gun is Chamois, Mouflon, Ibex etc..

I'm using 180 GR. Hornady SST's. Consistent rounds. I find them very good.

How far do you intend to shoot? I've got fallow deer & roe close to 300 yards on a number of occasions with my 308 155gr loads with zero issues.. Of course dial in & get a good wind call! Having owned the 300WM I wouldn't own one again for anything in this country! The 308 is more than adequate for deer out to 500 yards! Not saying I would shoot a deer that far as you can get closer!
