Thread: Custom stalking rifles

    Custom stalking rifles

I would love to see some of the members semi-custom/custom stalking rifles. I am thinking of building one from a Remington 700 action or a Sako in a McMillan stock. In need of inspiration.

    Best reguards,
    Josh.

Well this should be a popular thread. I don't have a rifle like you're looking for but I will say that a sako 75 or tikka 595 are necessary rifles than the 700.

my 6mmbr in a Joe west laminated stock (long range target work)
and in a tikka stock ( for stalking) tikka 595 donor action (was a 243) , pes T12 mod , pac-nor varmint profile match grade 1-8 twist barrel and a NXS Nightforce on top
puts a smile on my face every time I shoot it , it's so Bl--dy accurate
i sourced the components and Neil Mckillop built it for me

I've had a rifle built on a Remington 700 action and it was great
but in my opinion the Tikka 595 build quality and bolt movement is in another league

    remie 700 LA (was a 243 ) now a 6.5x55 again pax-nor barrel and T12 mod

I hope this is a popular thread! Lovely rifles so far. I just thought that work on 700's and sako's is easier thank tikkas. I am also wondering what calibre, thinking of a 6.5x55 ackley or a 7x57. Are these or 308 bolt faces?

The 6.5x55 and 7x57 are very slightly bigger than 308 in rim diameter. It'll depend on the rifle as to whether it'll work with a 308 bolt face. The bolt face can be opened up if needs be but it's obviously an added cost.
They're also what is called 'intermediate length', that is they are longer than 308 but shorter than 30-06. Again it'll come down to the rifle as to whether it can be made to work.

A 260 Rem or 7mm-08 (both available improved especially the latter) and they're 308 based and 308 length.
A step up in energy would be 6.5-284 or 284 Win. 308 length and rim diameter but much fatter so about on par with 6.5-06 or 280 Rem. Can be a bugger to make feed but a good riflesmith will square it away.

The 6.5x55 isn't 308 bolt face BUT my Remington was a 243 (308 bolt face)
and remingtons bolt face dia are usually on the large side so the 6.5x55 worked with no work needed
    to my bolt

    Interesting! I have a 6.5x284 and a .284 for f class so fancy something a bit different.

Ha! Well atleast I wasn't off base!

I'm guessing you want to stay with 6.5mm or 7mm? Thought about maybe going bigger?

Possibly, I have a 30 cal slot on my ticket so was thinking about just your normal 308. I can get reamers but it's extra cost! Decisions, decisions! I am probably limited to a 308 boltface in all reality.
