Idiot Sky journalist parrots park official's lack of knowledge of wildlife issues....

Wolf Pack Slays Entire Elk Herd For 'Sport'

A wolf pack in the US state of Wyoming has slaughtered an entire herd of elk, in what stunned wildlife officials suspect was a case of "sport killing".
The predators did not even bother to eat the 19 elk they killed on Tuesday night near the western town of Bondurant, just south of Jackson.
The 17 calves and two cows were set upon as they fed on grass and alfalfa hay left out by wildlife officials to help them survive the winter.
John Lund, of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, said there is "significant concern" at the scale of the attack and because wolves usually eat what they kill.

"It's extremely rare in that severity," said Mr Lund.
He said the pack suspected of the slaughter has nine wolves.
"It appears to be sport killing," he told CNN.

Mr Lund said about 7% of the local elk population, estimated at around 1,100, has been lost to wolves this winter.
He added there have been no reports of wolves attacking humans.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department can do little to prevent such kills because wolves are a protected animal.

Once nearly extinct, the animals were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park in the mid-1990s.
There are estimated to be about 330 wolves in Wyoming.
Wyoming's wolves benefit from a federally guaranteed endangered species status, which means they can't be hunted.
Environmental groups say that if control was passed over to the state, Wyoming would allow wolves to be shot on sight.
Wolves have remained off the endangered species list in Montana and Idaho since 2011.

Here's what I posted in reply:

Silly journalist who doesn't know what they are talking about!

The wolves killed all the elk so that the dead elk would be there for the pack to come back to over the next many days to eat.

Just as you or I might buy burgers or sausages in bulk and keep them in a fridge or freezer knowing that the cold will keep the meat fit to eat for days and weeks. So the wolves rely on the winter cold to do the same....although at other times they will still even so kill ALL the elk.

Other animals take food back to store in their "dens" or burrows. Or cache or bury it like squirrels. Wolves have neither "dens" nor burrows and cant bury or cache the elk so they leave the killed elk where they lie and return to them to eat and eat again in the coming days and weeks.

Elk are wandering animals. The wolves know that if they don't kill ALL the elk when that have that chance that tomorrow all the elk may have wandered away and gone.

It's not killing for "sport" or for "cruelty" it's killing because of they don't kill when the chance presents that chance may not present again. Just as other animals stockpile food when it by good chance or seasonally it becomes abundant.

The fault all the elk were killed is that the people in the park should have put down several or multiple small "drops" of the alafalfa hay here and there in different places apart from each other to keep the elk herd moving.

Wise and, in my view, a correct post - also other dependent species like coyote, ravens, foxes and magpies, even bears, would all benefit, as they do in the wild, from the packs kills. These are professional environmentalists - dont understand real eco - systems as they occur in the wild.

Couldn't see your reply on there. Perhaps it's awaiting moderators okay. Or perhaps it's not going to be posted for fear of letting them look like numpties.

More responses...some from "spoon whittlers" and "sandal weavers" but some from more grounded folks:

First and most glaring inaccuracy with the story is, how can a whole herd of Elk be comprised of 17 calves and 2 cows ?
