    SMLE, Lithgow action

Calling all enfield experts! I have an old smle, Lithgow, which I have had for a long time, I have had work done to it, from time to time. It has a steel PH type one piece mount I had made years ago, and more recently dovetailed to take Talley rings. I would really like to get rid of the one piece mount and would like to have the charger bridge filled and dove tailed to fit Talley rings. I guess this means welding or brazing? I realise heat is a big issue and if any one knows a smith competent to do it or can recommend someone to do it, I would love to hear from you.

Charger bridge was riveted onto the action sides as you know. Easiest option may be to remove and modify the sight base that is already present from your picture?

Thanks for that enfield spares, yes I did know but how easy is it to reattach? Other potential suitable methods etc.

You drill it out and it lifts off. Usually if you remove the blacking or parkerising you can see the "rivets". I had an Ishapore SMLE where the slots in the charger were not well cut enough to give faultless charger loading. My gunsmith removed it, took another charger off a scrap SMLE action and "riveted" it to my rifle. Worked, then, flawlessly with chargers. So as long as you can locate the "rivets" it's easy. Very easy. Make new "rivets" from steel rod.

Any one you could recommend? Everyone seems scared stiff to work on enfield.

Not that still does it now. But it isn't difficult.
