    Growth on Roe Deer

I was out yesterday evening for a walk around mainly looking for foxes but then I stumbled on a roe buck, his demise was down to the growth on his lower jaw. When I saw it I felt that I had little option than to shoot him. It looks like an injury that has become infected but anyone any other ideas?

    and a bit closer

    Thanks Andy

Did you incise it to see what is inside? It looks like a large abscess as you say, but it could also be a tumour of some type.

If it's liquid or cheesy puss then abscess, if hard fleshy tissue then tumour.

Either way, good animal to take.

I haven't cut it yet Alex as I didn't want to contaminate anything, I will defrost it and have a good look.

Would be very interested in what you find. If there is any chance of some photos that would be the icing on the cake!

i would do it frozen and save it leaking every where if there is puss in it.

    good call all the same.

Well finally the head has been prepared and my good friend Steve (Fallowmoor) prepared the head for me. I have had many requests as to the nature of this growth and can now confirm that it was all started from a tooth abscess, this had calcified and as you can see from the photo's was disfiguring his bottom jaw. There was a small amount of puss but this animal must have been in some serious discomfort. here it is..

I hope that this is the last one that I get like that, but who knows whats just around the corner?
