Thread: does a .22RF = .22LR on my ticket

    does a .22RF = .22LR on my ticket

I already shoot with a .308 and .223 but I still have permission for a .22RF. Sitting in a high seat in Hampshire last night, I could have taken a few rabbits in the absence of a roe buck and a .22 would be handy. Does my .22RF allow me to purchase a .22LR? Any advice appreciated.

    Regards

    Jeremy

    Yes,same thing.

.308 will kill a rabbit ,save you going home for your rimfire or carrying two rifles.......

    Got it cheers.

While a .308 makes for a great sauce, I'd prefer the meat roasted

Looks like you should go looking for that Brno .22lr

Or put in for a drilling with a .22lr insert

or make up some squib loads for the 308. 115 gn cast bullet trundling along at subsonic speed fuled by a case full of IMR Trail Boss should do the job, replicating the old Rook and Rabbit rifles. With a bit of luck and tweeking will shoot close enough to point of aim as your main 308 load. Half a dozen in your pocket would account for a few bunnies when Mr Roebuck fails to keep his appointment for dinner.

But the drilling / combination gun route is a very elegent solution as well - thats what I have and just use the 16 bore shot barrel for small and feathered game and vermin.

But a 22RF should be in every bodies cabinet. Technically 22RF = any 22 calibre that is rim fired so will include the 22 Rimfire Magnum, but I would just stick with the 22 LR - does the job out to 80 / 90 yds with cheap ammo.

When I had a slot for a 22rf, I asked my firearms department if I could buy a 22 mag, and was told if I did they would pull my ticket as a 22 mag to them was not a 22rf. When I told them a 22mag was a rim fire they blew their top and told me they would take me to court if I got a 22mag, as to them a 22rf was 22lr or short

    And they were right.

Yes a .22WMRF and its obsolete parent .22WRF are, of course, rimfire, and, of course, .22" it is customary convention that .22 Rimfire means .22LR or .22 Short and a variation for a .22WMRF would state .22 Magnum (Rimfire) or .22WMRF.

It beggars belief that this distinction and what actually has been requested and authorised to purchase is a matter of supposed confusion to an FAC holder granted an authority to acquire.

I'd be wary of a case FULL of Trail Boss. Hodgdon recommends a load of much less. I think the formula is half fill the case by volume to where the base of the bullet would be and load XX% (by weight - their website will give correct percentage) of that amount.

When I first applied I asked for a .22 (didn't specify lr although that as the assumption). My FAC came back with .22rf. upon checking with a couple of local gunshops and with my FEO they all said a .22WMR was covered by .22rf.

If an FLD wants to get picky about specifying a .22lr or .22 short then thats what they should put, not .22 rim fire and then become outraged when someone requests a .22 rimfire!
